I am looking for a brazing material that I can carbide tip water well drill bits. I understand that there is a powder that can be used that has carbide chips in the mix. The process is to heat the metal to a cherry red color and dip the tool into the powder. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can silver solder carbide to steel.

Search the Thermadyne Stoody web site. They have many diffenent choices for hard surface applications. I have never heard of the carbide you dip the part in but there are many weld/braze on carbides.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what your looking for. Do you want a welding/brazing material that is made of carbide, to apply a surface carbide coating or do you want to buy carbide tip inserts that you then braze on?

Sounds to me like he's attempting 'Hard-Surfacing' on a drill bit, without using the customary 'stick-weld' process. My searching fine no such 'dip-fix' process. Seems to me that any type of brass or bronze based powder would certainly melt at that cherry red color, but even if it contained carbide 'dust', your "hardsurface' would only be as strong/hard, as the brass/bronze, holding it in place! ~Scotty

I can't say I have ever seen a surface treated well drilling bit. All of the rotary drag bits I have seen for water/oil well drilling use solid TCI's (tungsten carbide insert) that are silver soldered in place. When the bit is worn out you send it out and get it retoothed. Maybe he's talking about some other kind of well bit.

Hi there is a product avail that has tungsten carbide chips that you pour onto the liquid bronze while it is still in a puddle dont know what it is called though or where you can get but i have seen the end result on some tillage points they only lasted about half the time of those fitted with the tiles though good luck:)

There is a product called "tube rod". It consists of a mild steel tube about 5/32 in diameter, and is filled with carbide granules and flux. Ideally, it's applied with TIG weld, but can be applied with OA if you are skilled enough.

Tooth type rock bits used to be hardfaced using this technique, and makes a tough and hard cutting tooth. The teeth could be made "self-sharpening" by hardfacing them on 1 side.

I know all that because I used to work for a rock bit manufacturer. :)

Contact these folks. I believe their drill bits are coated with this type of carbide particles applied at a red heat and can be recoated by individuals.
Seems to my memory that they sell the stuff for individual users.
