in the end, double check the length of the shaft, it almost sounds as though it might be too long and get additional force applied horizontally potentially causing a binding in the splines and/or lock ring - most will stick to a degree, but typically come loose with a bit of giggling.

I have one you have to pull the outer ring back then push whole assembly forward (while holding the outer ring back), to allow the engaging balls to release

My Wallenstein chipper is my only PTO implement. Believe me - there are those times when the Gods are truly against me. I have my PTO shaft bundled up in clean rags and stored in my work shed. So when I need it - it's nice and clean. Even then I will spray both ends with WD40.

I found the magic ointment after a bout with one of those wonderful couplers, the high pressure grease you use on the FEL joints, just squirt a finger full then work the grease into the bearings with the release collar back.

Glad it worked out. I had one stuck once with a new mower. Clean, lubed, and shiny. It finally popped off but not before I had damaged and warped the pull-collar. A machine shop repaired it but the guy said it looked like someone had beat the crap out of it. Duh, that was me I confessed.
