I am an owner of a XR3140 for the last 3 months, and I am new to tractors.
Slowly I am finding that there are a lot of things that could improve the tractor experience, I would like to hear from you. Any ideas, tips are welcomed! I am not trying to list all the implements that exist out there! But some stuff that can be really necessary

a)I believe that a toolbox is a must. Pins, a few tools, some water bottles etc. But where should I put it? Maybe above the tank?
b) Protection under the tractor. Has anyone done that? Eveything is so exposed, and I have bent one metal hose, and got some sticks stuck already. I am careful, but it seems that the damage will be inevitable
c) Hook(s) at the bucket.
d) Teeth at the bucket
e) Maybe a simple roof???
f) 12V power supply (cigarette connection, USB)
g) Somewhere to mount the phone, preferably able to charge,
h) and then some radio, speakers etc (under the roof) hahaha, its going to be fun!
i) I just added a 3rd function, getting ready for the grapple I designed.


On the implements what else is useful to you homesteaders? Other than a grapple and a snow plow blade? Maybe a bushhog?? I know it really depends on whatever are the individual needs, but since I am new to farm/tractor experience, I am afraid there are a lot of tools that I do not even know they exist!

Last 17+ years just about everything been hash over time a to... try Search... some have purchase while some have hand made items.

I like the idea of this thread, all the ideas from 17 years compacted into one thread :thumbsup: beside the search feature suxs....

For me, adding extra hydraulics helps in the learning curve of using a box blade or rear blade and everyone that adds it, wishes they did it sooner. Hydraulic Toplink and Sidelink. Also, hydraulics for a grapple if you have trees. Toothbar for the bucket was a big improvement...

teg - that's the God's honest truth - search feature sucks. Finding articles about any particular subject is akin to looking for a black golf ball on an unlit soccer pitch. I think having one thread where I can find information or begin a search is an excellent idea.

I feel concentration on the job at hand is important to decrease likelihood of tractor damage and personal injury.

I would not have a phone nor music on any tractor I owned. Tractors can kill you in one minute; ten seconds for newbies.

"Always" is too much to hope for. Google search is far superior to search resources built into this site.

I've been using the Google search bar on the forum page quite a bit when researching something specific. The more you use it, the easier it is to find what you are looking for.

A rear grader blade and box blade are fundamental for trail maintenance, driveway maintenance and smoothing out dig areas.
On the loader, having a pair of chain hooks and a pair of d-rings for lifting straps is essential.
Digging teeth or a Piranha cutting bar are extremely beneficial and they prevent wear of the actual loader edge.
Switched LED lighting for that odd instance where you have to be out past dark. I use the NiLight 18W (1.5 amp) cubes from Amazon.
Weight, be it an implement hanging from the rear or a 3-point ballast box that you buy or that you fashion of your own design, this will allow safer lifting and full use of your loader lifting ability.
Chain hooks and/or d-rings at the rear of the tractor for tie town and for dragging heavy items.
At least a small tool box with some pins, adjustable wrench and the proper wrench that fits your hydraulic fittings. Toss a shop rag or two in there as well.
Wheel weights or fluid filled rear tires adds safety, traction, braking, roll over protection and more.

You can scan your regional Craigslist weekly for additional 3 point items like the grader blade, box blade and other things. Often you can find faded, surface rusted old items that can be had for 25% of the cost of new. These things typically last and last and are heavy steel. Buy used, buy cheap, clean them up and paint thema and call it good.
Take inventory of every 3 point pin type you need, and go buy at least 2 spares of each one.
Go on Amazon or similar and get a plastic ratio/measuring cup and keep it near your fuel containers where you also keep your fuel additive. Run your preferred diesel fuel additive as a rule, apply it to your fuel containers before you put them away. Stock that fuel additive.
Get a dedicated grease gun of your choosing loaded with the grease you prefer for your loader pins and such.
Stock at least a gallon of your preferred hydraulic fluid and engine oil for your diesel. Don't forget to check them periodically.

Furthermore - When you use the full Google (not the little box on the TBN site) you can then select "Tools" from the line under the search box with "All News Videos Images Maps More Settings Tools", and that pops up a line which lets you select a time frame to search.

I disagree with not carrying a phone though. If you can get service a phone can save your butt. HAVING a phone and USING it while working the tractor are two different things.

You need a good place to store your chains. I have two on my G3038H. First is an open "cage" made of expanded steel and mounted to the left side FEL mast between the mast and the hood - there is a surprisingly large amount of space there and it's handy to the getting into the cab, chuck the chain and climb aboard. Next is the round cross support on the FEL - it is an open pipe. I drove a length of 3" ABS pipe into the tube (it fits great) and then use those red plumbing pressure test caps (the ones with the expanding rubber gasket and wing nut) to protect both ends - I have two lengths of chain and hooks in there, some rags, and a few regularly used tools (two larger adjustable wrenches and screwdrivers wrapped in shop rags. Like this - obviously not my tractor, unless I got wild with orange:


I will be adding tool boxes to a platform I will be putting onto the ROPS uprights with u-bolts. Kind of like this


I have already moved my flashing lights up on the ROPS and I will be mounting two TUFFY Storage boxes (one each side) onto the platforms above the fender and hand hold and below the lights. The Tuffy boxes are made for Jeep CJs and have a cutout to clear the roll-bar in the Jeep. They are waterproof, spacious, and they lock. I already have a set and would not be inclined to buy a set for around $300.


Lastly, if you regularly carry large items like chain saws, fuel cans, small generators, etc., you know there is no place to put them. Here is what I did with my previous tractor, a Kubota B21 TLB with a FOPS. I am adding a FOPS to my G3038H so I will again have two uprights forward of the dash so I may do this again. This tray was used VERY often at my ranch where I had a mile of mountain road to maintain and ditch well away from the barn. The hinge is simply round tube inside square tube - strong and simple.
