Can One Ship High Power Magnets?

I was about to order four rubber coated high power magnets 43mm, from China? They are to hold a light assembly onto my Cushman Mower Canopy.

I wonder if I would ever get them, or if they would stick to a bin or processing equipment on route. I did ask the vendor but I suspect, they won't understand what I am talking about.

It's interesting, because holding sidearms in place for ready use, seems to be a popular application for this type of magnet.

Unless they're astoundingly powerful (probably requiring liquid nitrogen for cooling and lots of electricity) - like that used for an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - my guess is that a smallish magnet, even very strong, in the middle of a large box will be fine and pretty much non-responsive.

Magnetic fields fall off with the square of distance, and you're intending to use them in direct contact (very small distance) which is where they're "very strong". From 3 inches away, you'll be able to feel a light tug. My guess is as strong as that is, you wouldn't be able to feel much of a pull from the magnet with it a foot away from a ferromagnetic metal; shipping the magnet in the middle of a box to provide some distance would be sufficient to keep it from getting "stuck" to anything else.

Most of the stuff I get from China are shipped in E-Packets, (strong padded envelopes). That wouldn't do well with these rare earth magnets.

Stupid thing is, shipping is FREE from China, but there is a Canadian supplier that's cheaper, but the shipping is outrageous, via Canada Post, which would be delivering the Chinese magnets to my mailbox anyway.

I just yesterday got my third shipment of neodymium's from magnets4sale.

I usually get a big one (450 pull) about a dozen 120 lb'ers and some miscellaneous.

Never a problem in shipping. They shipped with about a 4" thick roll of bubble plastic.

Only "problem" I've had is in deciding which ones to get.

Interesting. Thanks. I know being in the security business, many magnets have simply disappeared. Sometimes you find them much later, stuck to a hammer or other tool.

A friend showed me he would drop one through a 36" long section of 3/4" copper pipe. It would slowly float down to the other end, he explained why, something about creating such a high magnetic field.

That phenomenon is one of the most interesting things I have seen lately.

I recall a science project a friend of mine in High School did. Had a mild steel rod about 10 inches long with a small coil at the bottom (20 gauge copper about 200 wraps?). When energized with ac current a small aluminum ring would rise up the rod. Alternating magnetic field would induce a current in the ring creating it's own opposite magnetic field.

Strong permanent magnets should have a removable shunt (steel plate) to confine the magnetic field during shipping. For example, a horseshoe magnet would have a shunt between the poles.

Is that something like a new regulation?
I've gotten 3 of these 400lb+ pull magnets over the last 4 years and this last one came with a steel plate the size of the magnet.
