Can I use angle iron this way

I'd suggest going with C channel - I made mine out of C channel and even hanging weight off the tips I haven't bent them yet. My loader doesn't have a massive lift capacity (but more than a 318!) so you'd be fine with it and the weight difference between the c channel and angle should be minimal.

That' s what I would think too. You will find that stuff fairly inexpensive at a steel fab outfit. The stuff I got to fix my POS GM truk last year was I think 5 by 2 and I think 3/16 possibly quarter, with a very heavy web build up. It worked like a dream to rebuild that rusty krap GM put on there . I bought that 5" for under 50 buks last winter for 12'. If I was going to set something up I would use that stuff and then weld some rod along the webbing to make it even stronger .
