Camp property found, now updates.

Just below the topsoil is solid rock. The only way to drill a well would be, well, a well drilling rig that can dig through rock down to a water source.

In some areas, there is no rock just below the topsoil. You can pound a sand point by hand down pretty far to reach a water source.

A sand point is a pointed perforated section of pipe. You put a cap on it that's made to take hammer blows, and you pound it into the ground. Remove the cap, add a section of pipe, replace the driving cap and repeat.

Here's a kit. There are many videos on youtube showing how it's done.

Thanks. We have very thin soil too, then you hit granite. Most areas the soil is 2-3’, but no more. Our well is very shallow - literally 2 tiles so 4’ total, and usually has about 2’ of water in it. It’s right on a spring so replenishes fine except in droughts like we have now. I’ve been away for 2 weeks, but expect to return to no water. Not looking forward to that. Fortunately I have a drill rig coming this week or next to drill a deep well.

WOW! This is the first time that I looked at the location on Google. 80 acres surrounded by that much state land. Hunters dream!! I know you don't hunt, but trail makers/maintainers dream too! I know technically you legally are probably not allowed to make trails on state land, but that doesn't mean you are not allowed to clean and maintain existing trails. Look at all of those logging roads on the sat image! No one cares if you clean them up and ski all over that in the winter!View attachment 4112173 Very cool!! How close is the nearest neighbors? The folks who owned it (and still do, really) did so as a hunting camp. He is pretty elderly now and not sure when was the last time he hunted there. The son we meet says the drive is to long. Nonetheless, if we can improve the road out there and the logging trails on the property, maybe it will become more valuable to whoever we sell it to. We also hope to spent lots or time there starting this winter. If our weekend is dry, we'll be out there over the weekend!

On water, I would consider a Kelly well; typically about a 3 ft diameter whole, maybe 8 ft deep, you place a 15-18" ABS/HDPE with slots cut every inch or so, and wrapped in a filter fabric, into the hole, and then back fill the hole around the pipe with a #57 type stone. Water comes out "clean" but not potable.

Arly, hope your hiking around this weekend takes you up onto the big ridge on the southern end of your acreage. Who knows how accurate the google map topography is, but looks like it could be at least an 80-100' vertical, maybe some really cool rock cliffs and outcroppings?

@ArlyA before you head out there for the weekend, I suggest you look at the property on Google Earth, not Google Maps. Google earth will allow you to see elevations across the property by moving the cursor. Your camp is at about 1646' elevation. It looks like your elevations goes from a high of about 1675 to a low if about 1620.

Another cool feature of Google Earth is that you can look back in time at earlier satellite images to see how the property has changed over the years.

If you are not familiar with Google Earth, you can download it for free onto your computer. I use it very often to measure property size and distances. It is pretty accurate. At least it is accurate around here on flat land. Not sure how accurate it is in hills.

Ever hear of or use a composting toilet? I think they have evolved somewhat over the years. If my septic failed inspection up there I was considering one at least temporary. Til I either saved the funds to hire or find the time and attempt to build a new Septic system myself. Unfortunately with so much rock over there I doubt you'd pass a perk test.

Lots of Maine camps use composting toilets, and yes I believe that they've come a long way. Along with that LP refrigerator. LED lightning has also been huge for off grid use.

We have been on the southern end and these photos were taken there. Problem is with all the rain we've seen here this summer, the logging trail to the south is almost better with a canoe now! He hauled the materials to build two blinds down there on this route (just one shown) in dryer times.

Yeah, between solar/battery technology, LED lighting, 12v coolers/refrigeration, 12v accessories like fans, propane on-demand hot water heaters, diesel heaters, internet hotspots, composting toilets, etc. It has never been easier to live off grid. One can make a VERY comfortable existence in the bush and it doesn't have to break the bank. It is almost like cheating! I am starting to outfit my little off grid container cabin for more comfortable living as I have a buddy staying there. It has been fun to research and design these systems.
