Cab or No Cab

econometrics,

I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but it is refreshing to see how well you like your 5075. Mine should be ready next week and it will be my third JD in 6 years. A 3320, 4320, and now a cabbed 5075.

Having owned many of both I would not buy another tractor without a cab. Aside from heat and cold dust and dirt is a major issue. Today running a blade and the FEL moving dirt it was so dusty I could barely see at times. It was sure nice sitting in the cab staying clean. Has it been open station I would have been filthy. Also if you have kids there is no way I would let them ride on an open station tractor. A cab tractor is not 100% safe for them but is orders of magnitude safer than open station where they can just fall off.

Thanks! I really do like it a lot. I upgrade it to it from a 2wd 5103, so it's really a nice step up for me.

Search threads started by me and you can find some detailed posts of my purchase process and a lot of pics of my tractor. ;)

Post up some pics of your cabbed 5075 when you get it!

Temp was -5 and windchills were -30, I bet you wouldn't be up for hitting the bar in that! It happened multiple times this winter.

At minus 5 degrees, blizzard ties record set in 1942 - City & Region - The Buffalo News[/QUOTE

It was Monday January 6th 9AM here in east central IL. Temp was MINUS 15 F, wind was 20mph gusting to 28mph. That makes the wind chill 40-45 below. I plowed 5 neighbors out that morning plus our 1/2 mile drive (it took 2 hours, no cab). Yep we drank beer at the local bar after that and then stood around in a 30 degree garage drinking for a few more hours. It was actually a blast.

The Danville IL airport had MINUS 13 but we had MINUS 15 at our place. See link

I just bought a new tractor and I was debating on getting a cab or not..... I kinda wanted on and then again I didn't and I had the money to get one but didn't want to spend it on one..... But my wife was pushing for me to get the cab.... Well we ended up getting a cab and WE LOVE IT!!! So glad we made the right decision.... I plow (with the bucket for now) in a tee shirt...... The wife and kids laugh watching me cause they know I'm out in the cold but in the cab all toasty.

Here's why I did not buy a cab...

Spent the money I would have spent on a cab on a nice new trailer! AND saved some towing weight by not having a cab! :D

One of the many reasons we bought cabs.

I was on the NO CAB tractor yesterday and it was wonderful being in the open air, sunny 60˚ what a day not to have a cab!

(Of course there are many days not quite as nice and times when there is not enough moister in the ground to keep the dust down, but I enjoyed yesterday!)

My cab has rolling door latches that allow the doors to be locked but open about 3" for air circulation, has a "moon roof" that can be opened for ventilation, rear window opens fully if you want the open air experience. With all these open, it is good for spring time operation if the work isn't dusty or buggy, but come summer, all the doors get closed up and AC turned on. No limbs beating you in the face either and it cuts down the pollen I breath in when mowing which helps my allergies a lot.

When you think about the cost ($4500) divided by 60 months that equates to about $75 per month or $2.50 per day which is less than a cup of Starbucks coffee. Not a lot of money spent to allow working in comfort compared to being hot or freezing, attacked by wasps/bees/horseflies etc, breathing in dust and pollen, covered in grass debris when baling hay etc. To each his own as to whether the cost of a cab is worth it or not, but I dare say that most folks who think the cost it too great piss off more money daily on coffee and beer than what a cab cost.

Horseflys!.. How I remember when I mowed 7 acres every 2 weeks, how I would always make sure to wear a ball cap to swat those nasty vermin, and we seemed to always have a lot of them.

True, but one can make that argument about any varieties of ways that someone chooses to spend money. :) It's all about value on money spent, not just the amount of that money.

When you stretch any amount of money over 5 years, then over a month, then over a day... it always looks "worth it" to spend the extra dollars - on whatever it is you're trying to analyze.

That's what is great about the marketplace... it's a space where we can all tell the world what is valuable to us via the money we spend! And it creates jobs, commerce and livelihoods!

All I can see is that I wish I had done it sooner! There's nothing like moving 18-20" snow in sweater, sweat pants and slippers AND being nice and cool in the summer. As has been stated, there's pros and cons to everything, it's just what fits you, your anticipated work load (need for OOS) as well as the obvious...the checkbook.

Went I was a kid my grandfather had a mule.. it was open on top,, but you really didn't want to be on the back side when that old mule got in a bind,, That why I got enclosed cab.:D. Lou

OP
have you looked at used cab tractors? and or a used open station maybe a big and little for the same money as a new cab tractor. You seem to be new to all this and having more than one tractor could be very beneficial as you are learning how to hobby farm.

If I were still a young(er) man, lived in the south all my life, and didn't have allergies, I'd just go with a canopy. Cabs are soooo expensive that it takes a while to save for 'em if you didn't purchase with the tractor & roll into the finance payment.

But up here in the Siberia of the Americas - ya GOTTA have a cab! I durn near froze to death this winter on my new 1026R after having a cab for 11 years on my 445!! :cold:

I take them off for the summer - don't have A/C in them on smaller tractors. Plus when I go into the woods they snag on branches.

The main reason I have a tractor is for plowing snow on our very steep hill. How much would a cab change the center of gravity on my L3710 Kubota? When I slid it sideways down the hill the other day would it have been more likely to tip over with a cab? I actually doubt that it would make much difference and if it did I guess I would add more ballast. Just thinking outloud here :) Kevin
Your center of gravity should be mostly unchanged. The only thing that would change your center of gravity that much is a heavy lifted high item with your FEL or having a backhoe on the back of your machine will really change your center of gravity. A cab will not affect it much or any compared to a round bale of hay on the front or rear of the machine

I like having a cab. I don't mind removing the doors in summer for ventilation. No AC in my cab either. When it's snowing and 10 degrees outside with a foot of snow to clear, I want to be inside the comfort of the cab.
