Cab 4520 vs cab 5065M?

The tight spaces I work in is why I bought the 4520 plus the fact that I wanted to match all of my implements. The 4520 has plenty of power though as today I broke off a scarifier on my Frontier boxblade (Gannon). You know as much as anybody else on this forum. Good luck with your decision.:thumbsup:

We have small fields 3-10acres. And the corral is only about 80'x90', so a smaller footprint tractor was my first consideration.

It looks like the 110 is gonna stay. And long-term we're planning to shift more of the hay into larger round bales. So, the larger frame machine would be a good move down the road.

But, the money difference is alot less than I'd ever expected! (The 5000M will cost more than a comparable equipped 4000 machine - the question is - how much?)

That's a real HD box-blade!!! I'll bet that was a pretty good jerk when that tooth broke!

...!!. But, the 5000 series comes with a "buddy" seat and would be alot more tractor for a small, round baler and a bigger disc mower. 'Course, it'd also make taking on more hay ground a whole lot easier, too!

The 5000 series bunch doesn't have as much to say on TBN. So, it's harder to get a fix on the pros and cons of a bigger tractor compared to all the feedback that's available from the 4000 owner's.

What kinda "warts" should a prospective buyer be aware of on a 5000 series tractor?

You got that right. The 5M is a lot more tractor and will handle the hay equipment much better. Just a few months ago, I sold my NH 7610S and replaced it with a 5085M. The 5M will pretty much handle everthing that the 7610S would, but is physically smaller and much more manuverable.

I think that the reason you don't see much here on the 5 series tractors is this is mainly a "compact" tractor forum. Not many of larger ones here. BTW, John Deere also draws a line at the same place. A dealer is either listed as a "lawn, garden, and compact tractor" dealer or a "agriculture tractor" dealer.

As far as "warts," I don't know of any. I have nearly 80 hours on mine, so far, and the only issue that I've noticed is a tiny leak on a hydraulic cylinder.

I think you may have something on the market dynamics. I'm not complaining, but I bought a lot more tractor than what I thought I could get for that price range.

Just so you'll have a referrence, my 5085M has the cab, MFWD, 563 loader, 16x16 power reverser transmission, electro-hydraulic 3-pt hitch, 540-540E PTO, and the radial tire package. The price was in the low 50's.

I will tell you this much the 4520 has a lot more power than the 110, it is very noticeable. I was swapping seats all day today between the two and thought about you looking for something to add to the stable. The reason I would look into the 5085M is to get more power that may be needed in the future, this model should handle well. Should be similar in ability to a 3020 but the mfwd would be a real plus.


About the scarifier tooth, didn't feel it break off. I did find it today and will try welding it back together just for kicks.

The bigger front wheels/longer wheelbase will ride smoother. Just need more space to maneuver. It will "hay" better, but "corral" worse.
Tough choice.

Talked briefly with the local JD salesman, today. He quoted me ~~$68-69K for a 5065M but indicated there was "some" room there for discussion. Whew... it's been cold up here but not bad enough to cause "cranial failure". Maybe he went outside too soon after taking a shower!

Also quoted me $52.5K for a cab 4520!!! I asked him if that was a pretty solid number... yep, says he... pretty firm!

Just got a "first round" quote (no negotiation at all) of $43.5K from a dealer in the lower 48 for a 4520.

Pretty clear to me that I'll most likely be "Saddlin' up the Silverado" for another tractor trip down the hill!

Gonna go into town tomorrow morning for a sit down round of "build your own" on the computer with the salesman and get a better idea of why his numbers are so far away from everyone else's.

Are you a member of any equine association like AQHA etc? John Deere is partnered with numerous equine associations in both Canada and the USA. I took advantage of this program 3 years ago when I bought a 5425 cab. 23 percent off list if you find your own financing or pay cash.

That's a long ride, but "what's time to a hog?"

I would guess that the "destination charge" (or whatever they call it on a tractor) might be higher in AK, but it shouldn't be THAT much higher. Also, there was a small price increase for 2011, but it was about 5%, or roughly $2500 on my tractor. And, just so you'll know, my dealer said there is roughly a $2500 price difference per 10 hp. In other words, the 65hp should be about $5000 less than a 85hp model.

I would certainly shop around.

Do you really need a second fel of similar size to the 110? I ask because I studied this question for quite awhile and bought the 4520 without the fel but with full weights and other options for $34,000.

For 52,000 I can buy a 6115 with a few options, I don't think your dealer is shooting straight.

Sat down for a couple of hours today to clear up a number of questions regarding options on the 4520 (optional SCV's) and the 5065M (Hi/lo tranny, 3rd SCV on loader).

Good day all in all - much better understanding of the optional SCV's on the 4000 tractors. Placed a couple of more calls to the factory regarding the 5000 series tractors. Should know more in a few days.

Absolutely clear now - salesman is just quoting the cost estimates from the JD website configurator to me - MSRP.

I didn't bother to either question or counter-offer today... I'll wait until I better understand the pricing and configurations for the 5000 series machines before I cross that bridge!

Nonetheless, I can only guess that the philosophy of the dealership is - "take it or leave it; 'cause it's a long drive, otherwise"!

Time will tell...
