I pulled the battery out of my 16 month old BX25 last week so I could better access the radiator (clogged up with dog fur but that's a whole 'nother story) and found a little bit of wet and corrosion below the battery! What the heck? My question is what battery, other than Kubota, will work in this tractor. I've been told that the physical size is a "Group 26R" but I need to know how many Cold Cranking Amps I need. What is the original battery rated at? While I'm at it why are the Kubota batteries around $200? Thanks.

Kubota and no other tractor maker builds batteries. They use whatever type their electrical vendor supplies.

To replace your battery measure the H- W- D and go to anyplace that sells batteries.
By the HEAVIEST for the money battery that fits your dimensions.

The cold cranking amps can artificially be increased by making a very porous lead battery. An increased CC amp battery is NOT necessarily a better battery.

WHen buying a lead acid battery get the most lead for your $$... It will be more durable and deliver more amp hour service ... KennyV
PS ... you should be able to get a better battery than the OE for less than $75

I don't know about the size for the 25 but I put the old one from my wife's 2003 wrangler in it my bx 23 when the 23 died this -+ put the posts away from the hold bracket which was really close in my opinion.
Now they are now on the back side of the battery and put the new one in here jeep.:D

A couple of years ago, my brand new B2630 had a leaky battery. At 50 hours, the radiator and all the hydraulic cooling lines had all the paint eaten away. Battery tray severely corroded. I disassembled the whole mess, cleaned, repainted and replaced the battery with an Optima sealed battery. Two years later, no problems. Couldn't be happier. I don't know if these little tractors overcharge the batteries or if it's just the bouncing around, but the problem is fairly common. John Deere sells a battery box to contain their leaks - terrible 'fix' in my opinion.

You can find other sealed batteries besides the Optimas as well. My Optima was purchased on Amazon.com for $141.00. You can ship these batteries as they are sealed.

You might make sure it's not overfilled. On my battery I filled it up to the bottom of plastic height indicators inside the battery cells. That turned out to be too high. Need to use the line on the outside of the battery. When it was overfilled some acid came out the overflow tube, once I got the level right it stopped.

Some batteries may be rated for rougher service than others.:)

I got the 3 year free replacement battery balance pro rated for around $65.00.
If it dies it can go back they said it takes an hour for them to test it and if it fails you get a new battery.

Egon I think you are right, anyway it use to be that way. But I have not seen any 'rough service' application in quite a few years.
I think battery manufactures support the plates anticipating very rough service in all applications now...
Or perhaps they have noticed the deteriorating condition of out roads and highways, and just started making automotive batteries capable of lasting with that type of beating... KennyV

Can you tell me what the model # of Optima battery you purchased?
Thanks in advance

I bought the Optima Yellow Top D51R. It is an Optima 8073-167. It's been flawless for 100 hrs. now.

Battery Specifications
Part# 8073-167
Model# D51R
Connections: Top SAE / BCI automotive posts only.

Length: 9.313"
Width: 5.063"
Height: 8.938" (height at the top of the terminals)
Weight: 26.0 lbs.
CCA: 450 Amps
MCA: 575 Amps
RC: 66 Minutes

It's $144.77 right now on Amazon.com with free shipping.

Check Optima battery site for specific sizes and configurations to meet your needs. For instance, you can get the same battery with the posts oriented differently.

Hope this helps.

Well, I drug my feet and wasn't able to go comparison shopping. I needed to mow yesterday and ended up just heading over to my local Autozone and picking up a Duralast for $85 w/ core exchange.

Model 26R-DL
7 YR Notes: *** 575 cold cranking Amps (710 cranking Amps) *** 90 reserve minutes. -> 2 year free replacement

For what it's worth, to make it easier to get a replacement you can use a 2005 Dodge Neon as your 'replacement vehicle' since no auto places keep tractor data around. It's the exact size you'll need for the BX25 and the terminals are in the correct orientation.

I'm still ticked that the original battery developed a crack / leak in the case after only 16 months and 83 hours. Actually, there is no telling how long the leak had been going on. If I'd noticed before February I could have got a replacement under warranty! I wonder why it is that the original $200 battery only had a 12 month warranty while my $85 replacement carrys a 7 year with a 2 year no questions asked warranty... hmmm.
