I have started trying to get prices on tractors and I got one yesterday from a dealer about 30 miles away that I think is quite good. The question that I am dealing with is "Are the implements necessary?"

Here is what I got:

Kubota BX2230 w/60" deck - $9990
Loader - $2550
Engine Block Heater - $39
Woods Estate Series Box Scraper - $530
Woods Estate Series Landscape Rake with wheels - $640

For a total of $14642.68 with taxes

He also gave me the prices on a couple other things as an option:

Woods Estate Series GTC40 Tiller - $1250
Farm King 52" Rear Snowblower - $1295

I am not sure how often I will use the landscape rake and box scraper. I know I will use it alot initially since we are finishing up building our house and will have alot of landscape work to do but after that I have questions. I also don't know that I can justify the $2500+ price tag for the Kubota front snowblower as we haven't received alot of snow in Northern Illinois as of late.

What are the oppinions of the group?

Thanks.
Curtis

These 2 tools will not be used again. Once the projects they are required for are complete.
Get a weight box for the loader and see if you can rent the Box Scraper and Rake. If all you are going to do is work your landscape then cut lawn.

How much snowblowing will you need to do?? Rear blowers work great but they are a pain, since you spend alot of time contorted around in the seat. If your driveway/road will take more than an hour to clear and you have to do it more than once a week, I would definitely spring for the front snowblower.

Well, seeings as we haven't had a good snow here in 3yrs there is no telling. My driveway will be about 135' long so it may take awhile to clear it but the snows around here are typically only about 5-6" at a time. I am debating springing for the front mount Bota blower anyway, might be worth the cost. Although, if I spring for it I will want to make the modifications that Junkman is making to his. Hydraulic chute rotation and chute deflector. Hmmm, might have to break out the ole Mig welder...

After looking over the prices, this deal is really no better than the others that I have received. It is about $200 cheaper which is a little I guess. Might have to go do some bargaining. Maybe I can get them to throw in a set of bar tires...

Thanks for the replies thus far.

Kubota BX2230 w/60" deck - $9990

Not bad prices........

Woods Estate Series GTC40 Tiller - $1250
Farm King 52" Rear Snowblower - $1295

Also not bad prices as in NY thats what I'm seeing also.

If snow isn't a big issue then do something else such as a walk behind. Length of driveway is something to think about. My place gets over 100" a year and the drive is 635' long so a blower is in my plans but I want the loader because of drifting ect.....Last winter I did ok without a blower but it took a while to clear the driveway.

The 2230 is sweet. I love it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you're going to need the implements to do work that you have planned, then buy them. Even if you will be finished in a year, and might think you won't ever need them again, you still need them to get the job at hand done.

Chances are, as a Sub Compact owner, you are not going to be able to rent those implements, as most rental yards only deal with larger Compact sized implements. That's what I've found around here.

You always have the option of selling the implements when you're done with them.

As and FYI, I have a 50" tiller, and my 24 hp machine handles it just fine. I haven't yet hooked it up to my neighbor's BX22, so I can't say how your machine would handle a tiller that size. However, my machine loses about 15-20% of its power at this altitude, so I'd suspect your 22hp machine should have at least as much power, if not a little more down at your elevation. I have a 72" landscape rake, and it handles that well too, but would do even better if I were to get the wheel kit. I got a 60" rear blade, for light dirt work, but mostly for snow removal - it'll be fine in the snow, but it can easily dig in and stop the machine in it's tracks while doing dirt work. All of those implements will work just fine down the road if I decide to upgrade to a small Compact machine up to 35 hp. Unfortunately, you can't really go a bit bigger on a box blade to cover a potential future larger tractor purchase, as a box blade that's too big will just stop an undersized tractor.

Whenever I needed an attachment I have talked to my dealer. Almost all the items where available to be rented. Some of the attachments were available to be purchased. My tiller and landscape rake were rental units. Ask your dealer. Many attachments can be rented for all size tractors especially if you live near a large metropolitan area.

I have this piece for my BX2200 and find it works pretty well. I used it for spreading loam and clearing areas around the edge of my lawn where brush, leaves, etc build up. I also use it in the fall for clearing up leaves from the front lawn. A rake like this isn't great for this but it does get the bulk of them all in one spot for me so I can haul them away.

If you don't expect to get much snow you could get a rear blade for a whole lot cheaper than a snow blower and that plus your loader will handle your snow. If you get big and or frequent storms then maybe you might want to invest in one of the blowers.

DEFINATELY get the block heater! It's cheap money and I can tell you from first hand experience that these tractors may not start in cold weather without one. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
