Tractor
bx2200
/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif my tractor started normaly, then after running about a minute started chugging an a white thick exhaust was comming from the exhaust pipe. I turned the tractor off, now it will not start (cranks fine). Seems like it is not getting any fuel. Tractor has 106 hours on it and maintained. My guess is bad fuel or water in the fuel. I'm new to the diesels. Any suggestions?

From reading other posts, it sounds like the small plastic filters that catch the water in the fuel have filled. After reading what some others have gone through with these filters, I am going to be keeping spares on the shelf for just this reason. I am still looking for a water separator that is small enough to fit onto the BX tractor..... All that I have found so far are huge. I would suggest that you go to the dealer and buy a new pair of filters and install them before going any further. I always start with the most obvious and easiest before I get too involved with solving the problem.

Junkman,
Check over on the Kioti forum. If I remember right they had a small one that was really inexpensive.

Sorry to hear of your trouble, but you have water in your fuel, same thing happened on my BX 22. You will need to get under the tractor and disconnect the fuel line and drain the tank. Replace fuel filters, there are two.Refill tank with fresh fuel, I would add fuel conditioner such as power service brand to the tank. Bleed fuel lines. Attempt to start tractor, If you got the water all out it will crank, If not you will have to follow the drain/replace filter/flush/bleed procedure again. I had to replace the filters and drain tank three times to get it to run right.
The good news is, if there is any, is that have not permently harmed you tractor if you get the water out quickly.

Good luck.

Any chance you filled her up with gasoline? Easy mistake to make (I did the reverse on a Ford Pinto once, that was quite entertaining...)

Almost certain it is water! The other guys have got it right! If where you live is moist or has up down temps, you can get a pile of condensation in the fuel tank. It can help to always keep it nearly full of fuel to reduce the volume of air (and therefore moisture) in the tank.

Good post here guys. Since I have a BX22 and I had a question. Why does not Kubota put a water seperator on it? My old JD 455 had one and that was a lawn tractor.

Well I think it is time to get a Dahl Compact Fuel Filter/Water Separator and install it after the 2nd plastic filter (close to engine).

I would install it closest to the tank to remove the maximum amount of water and other contaminants. That way, the disposable filters will stay cleaner and if anything does get by, they will pick it up before it makes it to the injector pump....

Will the water be primarily from the fuel being added or from the tank itself? Would the water separating funnel that I had see on here work if you kept the tank full all the time? $170 for one of these separators is quite a bit.

This is my first Diesel and haven't went through a winter yet so I am kinda curious. Also can you add something like dry gas like you add to cars?

Please enlighten as Winter is probably here in NY in about 2 weeks if it's anything like last year.........in fact I think it just ended about 3 weeks ago, at least I don't remember Spring or Summer this year.

Thanks,

Buy fresh fuel during the winter at truck stops or areas where a lot of fuel goes through. They will switch to winter grade fuel in the fall that has additives to control gelling of the parafins (waxes) in diesel.

As far as water, generally the underground tanks are fine but if you store on site, especially big tanks that spend time partially full, you can be in trouble.

Water separator is a good investment, cheaper than filters, most places will have a universal model for 20-30$ with a see through bowl.

I honestly don't know about additives for water in diesel, they have fuel winterizing additives for summer fuel being used in the winter.

Most of my experience with water in the fuel has been with gas equipment, I've emptied tanks of tractors that have sat for a couple of years and there will be a litre of water and a litre of varnished fuel. It is amazing condensation can fill the thing up! We siphon from the bottom of the tank until fuel comes out at the start of the mowing season.

I have over 40 years experience with diesel cars, so I think that I can answer the question for you. The funnel that is being sold uses a special screen that holds the water back to a degree. You have to pour the fuel through it slowly for it to work properly and not fill the funnel with too much product. If you put too much product into the funnel, the pressure from the fuel will push the water that it has separated through the mesh. You need to read the instruction that are posted on the web site carefully to learn about this. It is a good product, but it does have its limitations.

Water will mix with fuel in the container if it is moved around a lot before you start pouring from it. Also, as you tilt a container the water which is at the bottom will rise towards the spout and come out with the fuel. This is one reason that I don't like using containers unless there is no other way.

If you keep the fuel tank in the tractor filled after using it, there will be no way that condensation can form in the tank. This is very important during the humid months and less important during the dry winter months.

I would not recommend using any products like dry gas in the diesel fuel because the alcohol can do damage to the injector pump. The price of the fuel filter is expensive, but the damage that water can do to the engine is more expensive. You can buy a lot of the Kubota throw away fuel filters for that amount of money.

As it has been said here in many of the posts about fuel, get your fuel where the trucks do. That is the best insurance against getting water in the fuel. The truck stops are always monitoring the tanks for water and some even use an electronic system that shuts down the pump if it senses water. The one thing to consider is the number of people that have similar units on this site and how many of them have experience fuel problems. I would say that it is a very small percentage of the people. If you know your fuel source, then chances are that you will not have any problems.

Ask your dealer if he/she recommends any fuel supplements for your machine..... You can also read what others on this site have had to say about supplements. The one thing for sure, there is no shortage of differing opinions on what to do and mine is only one of them...

I am going to continue to seek out a small fuel / water separator that is lower priced. I know that they must be out there, because there are so many small diesel engines in service today.

Slowzuki and Junkman,

Thanks for the replies and the knowledge sharing. I add a fuel additive every tank full that is for keeping fuel from gelling in the winter, and cleaning the fuel injectors. A friend of mine who has had diesel tractor for several years recommended doing that.

I only buy 5 gallons of fuel at at time, and rarely have it sitting in my can, it typically sits in the tractor because I run it down to 1/4 tank and then fill it.

Thanks again,

Thanks for all of the info guys /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You would be better off keeping the tank topped off every time and keeping the spare fuel in a sealed container. The tractor tank is a vented system, however the storage container is not. Keep it tightly closed between uses and no moisture can enter the container and you will keep moisture out of the tractor tank..... I believe in preventative maintenance and this is just part of it.

thanks for all your help, replaced the filters and fuel. Had to crank it a little bit, but it started right up. I'll tell you what, it is running really smooth, also. Thanks again!!!

it is worth having a spare pair of filters on the shelf just for the times that you need them and the dealer is closed..... like on Saturday afternoon and it is snowing for the past 8 hours.... winter is comming... faster than we like it to....
