Did you know that your BX hood latch has a plastic latch hook that you're suppose to use to hold the hood slightly open while you slide the plastic engine cowl out? I didn't either until I read the little sticker by the muffler outlining the procedure for removing the engine cowl. Hadn't noticed that sticker either. Anyway, came across this doing my 200 hour maintenance today. Don't recall it every being mentioned so thought I'd highlight it for anyone unaware it existed.

Photo's are kind of lousy being cell phone pic's, but that's all I had available when I saw it. I've had a BX for close to 4 years now and just never tripped across this little hood latch hook.

Why not? I don't see the difference as far as plastic or steel goes. You still have to open the hood slightly to slide the cowl out, no?

Yep, I use mine when removing the cowling.

It's in the manual of my BX2660 too. Works well.

Because my plastic hood is so light that it stays up on it's own.

I always thought it was to let some of the excess HP bleed out when needed.

I couldn't find the strap on my BX25 until I went to remove the battery for winter storage. There is was.

Found it years ago. And yes, plastic hoods have them too!

What is the cowl? Why is it being removed? Obviously I didn't know about this feature since I didn't know I had a reason for utilizing it.

When you want to remove the wrap around front cover (bonnet side by parts manual) for the engine, the front of the hood (bonnet) will obstruct it when you loosen the knobs and slide it forward. With the hood held in that position, the piece slides off easy.

Thanks. Now I know what people are referring to when they write about the cowl.:D

Thanks for the tip. Just did my 300 hr service today and that would have really helped.

I have just always removed the four nuts and the plastic hood on my BX24. Just seemed logical to have it out of the way if I had to pull front grill bar & cowl.:confused2:

I can't find mine either. Guess I'll look behind the battery. Went to do my 100 hr. service today, (the first nice day since last year) and no hood strap.

I hear ya on the nice day, McCash. I got a plugged underground drain pipe. I'll be firing up the BX-25 shortly to see what the problem is. When you own a BX-25, digging becomes fun.

They are kind of hard to see.

Now you tell me?? ;) Thanks for sharing. I may have to go out to the tractor right now to see if mine is there! I've had mine 8 years maybe(?), and didn't know about that.

EDIT - I'm back...yep, it's there! Thanks, and thanks to TripleR for the pics. Wouldn't have found it otherwise.
