Learning to use the bucket on this is an art. You want a low angle of entry with the lead edge, then feather it out so that the level indicator on the bucket shows about level once the cutting edge is burried. Rear weights or the backhoe definitely help with digging, as does low range 4wd.

As for going downhill with a loaded bucket, definitely use 4wd and if it does start to run away, just lower the bucket to the ground and it will stop you. Plowing snow with the bucket is a good trainer for real digging in dirt. Good luck. My BX23 is a workhorse, my only complaint is that the hydraulics are a little starved when you are moving more than one direction at a time (lift and curl bucket, or using the hoe). That may be by design though, to keep the casual user from breaking something or hurting themselves.

Ha! I didn't notice that and I was confused by the new BX2200. I bet he's a master with the loader now, and probably has a bigger tractor by now as well. :D
