BX-24 Rear Drive Shaft Fan Questions

I haven't lost the fan yet, but I did have a stick jam in the opening for the forward pedal, causing an unpleasant uncontrolled forward motion. The only way I was able to stop was was to shut off the engine.

Seems like a safety issue to me. The whole bottom needs better protection.

Let's see how effective this fan cover will be.

There does not seem to be any pre drilled frame holes for mounting the fan cover on a BX 2350 and no directions came with it. I guess I'll wait until it warms up a bit before I take another look at the situation.

HST Sensor...Hmmm. Would have to be mounted in the actual closed loop HST flow path between pump and motor to be of any use. Reading the temp on the return line from the power steering wouldn't do any good. On the top and bottom of the HST there are two plugs that close the galleries between the HST pump and motor. The plugs are threaded 3/4 16 UNF. If a temp sensor could be found to fit in one of these plug openings, could be wired to a gauge (or the existing idiot light on some BXs if you could find the right temp switch). Would probably need to be stainless and rated to 2000+ psi. Spec for HST pressure is 1991 psi. Would have to make sure sensor didn't protrude too far into flow path and impede flow.

Picture below shows location of these plugs on bottom of HST. There are two more plugs on top of HST that would be more protected if there is room. I know these plugs exist on the 22, 23, 24, 2200, & 2230.

I'd be interested if anybody had a good idea where to get a temp sensor.

Has anyone installed this Kubota skid plate yet? I'm very curious about whether it seems to offer much protection for the fan. Also, how does access to the mid-PTO look?

I'm having a hard time spending $180 on the Bro-Tek plate if this one will do.

Look at link in post #2, even if you need a welding shop to put it together, it will be a cheaper alternative.

I just received my fan cover kit also but cant figure out where it bolts to. Any one have any experience putting one of these on yet?

I haven't ordered one yet , but it looks like the v points up and the bolts holes go towards the front direction. I looked at my BX and there are 2 holes there for mounting on the frame. just looking at the cross member of tube, there seems to be a limited amount of working space.

I am waiting to see one installed but I doesn't look like it would give much protection from the kind of things I am likely to run into around here.

I have installed a Kubota PN K2581-92120 "skid plate" on my BX-24. The part is more of a fan guard than a skid plate. But for $37, it is what it is. I had to scratch my head a little bit to figure out how it fit up. So I thought that I would provide some photos of the process.

The first photo shows the fan area before the installation.
The second photo shows the guard partially installed, and hanging down by just 2 bolts.
The third photo is the finished job.

As you can see, the fan is still exposed to brush and limbs that may attack it horizontally, but not from straight down.

By the way, the big rusty things are the wheel spacer/weights.

It will certainly protect the fan better than no guard, but with some of the areas on my property I take mine, I'm glad I "diamond-plated" the underside of my BX...

Finally!!!! pics of the fan protector installed..nice pics kdm... thanks for posting... it dont look like it really does too much more than them cross bars that are already there.whats the rating of the overall installation? maybe the diamond plated skid plates would provide better coverage

I think I will stick with my Bro-Tek rear skid plate. The Kubota version doesn't seem to be very well thought out for actual protection. Thanks for the pics.

Where did you find the inner wheel weights. I have the outside ones on my bx-23 but snag stuff when snow blading (need to move flower barrels farther away from sidewalk

Not to be a nit picker ,but the boot on your driveshaft looks a little worse for wear. I like the looks of that protection plate,but I don't think it will provide enough cover for using the brush mower. In my case anyway. Nice wheel weights.

It doesn't look to me like the Kubota protector does any good. Doesn't prevent a stick coming in from the front only from the very bottom. I installed the Bro-tek rear skidplate. It took me about an hour and protects everything very well. It was $180 well spent. why spend $18000 on a nice tractor and they quibble over an extra $140 above the Kubota protector. Doesn't make sense.
