BX 1800 won\'t stop

When started up the engine immediately went into a very high rpm and the key wouldn't turn it off. Large cloud of black smoke. Could only stop it by stalling it.

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

Not being a mechanic, I don't know what the problem is, but the first thing that came to mind when I read this was that someone put some gasoline in the diesel fuel tank.

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

Thanks Bird, but I don't think that is likely. Although it sure would be nice if it was that simple. I'm the only one who fuels it. It was a very strange occurence. I had already mowed for 30 minutes. Stopped for lunch, no new fuel added. Then the run away engine. My wife came out and thought it was going to blow up. Sort of seemed that way to me also.

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

Is it possible throttle linkage has come loose, leaving the throttle wide open? I'm afraid I'm not much help; just guessing.

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

Not likely, but I heard if you injest natural gas or propane in to the air intake this sort of thing happens. Can't think of anything else that would cause it.
Seems to me it has to be fuel or air related. Most likely fuel.

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

Most diesels have a stop solenoid and my guess is that yours is defective. My Benz diesel had a lever on the engine that you would push if the key wouldn't shut it down. I haven't looked for one on the BX, and I doubt that Kubota thought that far ahead to put one on it. I more than likely will be electrical, such as a blown fuse....

Re: BX 1800 won\'t stop

I have heard of diesels running away on oil coming past the rings from the crankcase when over reved. The shrimpers who experienced this had air intake shutoff plates to close since the fuel in this situation can't be shut off.

I assume these engines have a governor. If it failed the engine might over rev. The wouldn't explain why the fuel shutoff solinoid didn't work when the key was turned off. I would check for an electrical problem with that.

Maybe both of these problems combined. The governor let it over rev and it started running on it's on oil, in which case the fuel shutoff would not stop the engine.

Hmmm, I also suspect gasoline.
Also, check the throttle linkage, blown fueses to the shut off solenoid. J

Well? Have you diagnosed the problem yet?
