Has anyone ever burned there dogs eyes while they were welding ? I am setting up a small welding shop and have 6 Border Collies who love to be around me when I go outside so I am worried their eyes will get flashed when I weld

I think I would keep them else ware while welding, it is really hard to keep the welding helmets on that breed

Usually my dogs take off fast as soon as I strike an arc.....but they can't catch the cat... He hits the afterburner!!!

I have burnt my own with the plasma, had no idea until the next morning. Do the dogs a favor and keep them away. I use a shield when working outside so my dogs (about 40' away) don't (more like "can't") look at the arc.

I completely agree with all the previous posts. The best solution would be to weld where your dogs will not have the chance to suffer harm. Best to keep them confined to a different area where you aren't welding.

Dogs & other animals are smarter than People. They will look away & often go away when you start welding.

Your eyes or others can be flashed or burned from a 100 feet or more. Been there - done that. If you get a bad burn it will start hurting fairly soon.

Best treatment is raw potato. Grated up in soft cotton rag and put on your eyes. You want to get the potato juice in your eyes. Do that as soon as you feel the irritation, don't wait for the real pain to start.

You are correct in regards to utilizing raw potato. I flash burned my eyes in 1972 at work and my Father instructed me to do this. It worked in alleviating the pain. I went to the E.R. the next morning to have everything checked out. The attending physician had never heard of this method. BTW, my eyes did not suffer permanent damage.
