An old elm fell over on my fence. Impaled on the fence post! What are the odds?

I got most of it cleaned up, but this piece is stuck quite well to the post. Not sure how I'll get it off.

I had a big hickory fall a few years ago, impaling a corner survey marker. I thought the neighbor moved the pin, nope the tree hammered it into the ground.

Press the tractor bucket up against one side and drive a wedge into the other side.
Or stand in the bucket and use an axe to split the wood at your feet... Should be pretty easy as it has to be punky for the post to go through it like that.

What are the odds? Figure the tree has to hit near the center of the tree. Figure the width between posts. Divide the two and that will give you the odds. Just a rough figure 50-50.

If it bothers you, pull the post and split the round with a maul.

I would just use my power tool 20V small circular saw. A few passes, and it would be off. No need to pound nor hammer any more to the post or ruin the fence mesh.

Around here, there's no such thing as an "old" elm. Dutch elm disease got all the old ones decades ago. My grandfather liked having elms around, calling them "Nature's lightning rods." He claimed he'd seen several times when lightning had hit an elm rather than a nearby building.
We still have elms around, but they are a shadow of what the old ones used to be. They get just about big enough to reproduce a couple of times when disease takes them out.

Cut it carefully a couple inches on each side of the post. If a wedge does not work, pull out and replace the post. Dynamite comes to mind.
