Building a road down to the river

After paying the 2K you could be broke and then end up "Living in a Van down by the river!!". (Criss Farley) :)
I would go for it!
As long you know the limits of your tractor then go for it.
I hate paying for someone else to do something I can do myself.

Yes! Just need the road wide enough for a van... ;)

$2k is a good deal. You can always spread the gravel with your own equipment later.

Based on your pictures and my view only, I'd try to tackle that with my BX. Would do as much as I could just for the fun of it, then if needed, you could get him to finish if you get in over your head. I've cut trails through my woods and removed a lot of privet with a BX. A tooth bar is very helpful for getting under the tree roots to help pop them out. A grapple is also a great tool. I have both.

One word of caution as you mentioned the stuff down by the river is that soil may be very soft and loose, so do be careful not to get the tractor stuck down there.

I would put the box blade on the rear and cut dirt from above and drag it down towards the steep part, and then use the loader to push it over and taper that steep part out. Crown the entire thing with the box blade or heck, even a grader blade might be able to get it done... But I would take that on without question. If it took me 4 long weekends instead of his 8 hour day, I would be happier because I would get 4 long weekends of playing with my man toys!

I feel that the question is not "can you do it?", rather the question is "do you want to spend the time to do it?". I would spend the time and I would love every second of it.

Sounds like a good plan Rock Crawler. I don't have a lot of time but time spend on the tractor is good. We'll see how it goes!

Dragging dirt down from the top for fill at the bottom sounds good, until you can't compact it and it rains. Then your dirt is gone and you have a muddy mess. Think it out real well before proceeding with dirt work on slopes.

I've done this in my area, we have a mixture of small flat Rock (shale?) In clay. What I do is every 6 inches or so I run the tractor back and forth until it's hard and flat, then bring in a new layer and pack it in again. I repeat until I get the final level I want. Yes, you'll still need to do minor rain damage repairs every spring, but it's no big deal.... I have a tractor now! I used to do this with a hoe, digging bar and spade shovel and pack it with my Rhino. This works 100x faster and 100x better. Life is good with a tractor that will do your manual labor.
