I am new to this forum and ive seen some great ideas on this site . I am going to make a bale spike for my 3 point hitch on my tractor and am on a budget ,cant affford to buy a spear. i have a chevy truck axle i want to make the spear out of, i was wandering if anyone has done anything like this , if so how would i make the point on it ,and how would i attatch it to frame it still has the hub on it . I was going to use 3" square tubing for frame . could i use u bolts to attach to frame?:confused:

Cut the hub off the axle with a cut off wheel, band saw or hack saw. Use a grinding wheel to shape a point on the end (it doesn't have to be perfect to work). Burn or drill a hole large enough to run the spear all the way through the 3 inch square tubing and weld on both sides.

I bought a little wire feed welder a few years ago and attempted to build a bale spear. It would break and I would renforce it, time and time again. About the time I thought i had it, it would break again. Then my wife asked," Why don't you just go down and buy one?" It was the best $110 bucks I ever spent at the fleet supply.
