Backhoe Build A Backhoe For PT425... It Could Happen

Started welding tonight. I wanted to wait until I had all the pieces cut before starting to weld, but realized that would be impossible, since I am not strictly following the plans. I needed to weld the first piece on the frame so that I can measure, cut, drill and weld the two brackets that will hold the top and bottom of the boom pivot assembly.

So, here's a couple pictures of the first two pieces going together.

1st one is a side view of the main frame tipped on its side. It is 48" long. The piece I welded on is about 6" long.

2nd picture is of the 6" piece welded onto the top front of the main frame rail.

Last one for tonight is an end view of the front of the main frame rail with the 6" piece on top. This is the proper orientation to the ground as it will be when finished. It started to rain AGAIN!!! 9 days straight with rain. Maybe I'll get it finished in time to dig a moat around my house. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Went to the storage shed today and picked up my last piece of 4X4 tubing. Also brought home a sheet of 1/2" diamond plate about 2' x 4'. Pieces of that will be used for making my brackets and tabs for cylinder mounting and the boom swivel holders. I'll rough them out with the torch and finish them up on the band saw and grinder. I also found a piece of 1/8" diamond plate about 6' x 14". That will be my floor plating.

I currently have about 2 hours of actual labor into it. The rest has been driving, hauling, planning, waiting for the saw and such. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

are you using a mig torch to cut the metal with, or a plasma cutter? Just curious, since the only thing I know about welding is not to stare into the bright light...
