Radios, is that aluminum taking the place of a ground wire? I wonder what kind of issue would have caused him to replace it with the can?

that's not a ground wire, it's the points wire. the points do ground that wire, but only on the low point of the cam, on the high point of the cam, that wire is open, excluding the resistance of the coil, of course..

The primary conductor was probably broke and instead of buying one someone tried to make a replacement.

Thanks for the details, Chris! Hmmm- to keep it as is, or get this thing back to stock? This is just one aspect to this poor ol' tractor that I need to fix. But I just need a little time to get her back to standard.
