I transplanted a sod border along the edge of my driveway to keep the stones (pea rock) at bay, but after 2 years the sod I transplanted is starting to take over my driveway and growing into the stones. I needed something to trim the (now horizontally growing) grass and a power edger with a spinning blade just wasn't going to work with those stones. So I conceived and fabricated this edger using parts from a local trailer supply, and a peice of 1/4" steel plate cut by my local steel supplier. It works great and I just wanted to share it.

Looks like it should do the trick. Do you use down force from the loader or just let it float?

That is pretty creative. How hard is it to maneuver the bucket on a curve and is it working and keeping the grass in check?

I think that is pretty good too. How do you peel up the thin strip of sod ??

That's pretty creative. And with a hydrostat you can creep along slow enough to make an accurate cut, cool.

Very nice. I suspect you will see something like that for sale soon, once a Mfr pattents your idea.

Creative, I agree.

Did you consider other attachments methods that would not require making holes in bucket? Perhaps using a loader width pipe with welded on clamps to both sides of bucket (or using a "ratchet rake" sort of attachment)? The ratchet rate attachment might work particularly well with the bucked edge facing down so minimal stress on attachment (e.g. bracket to fit over and under bucket edge on each side of bucket with axle pipe all the way across).

What was the reason for using the wheel? To space the cutter plate further away from the bucket edge/wheel hub, rather than mounting the cutter directly to the wheel hub?

With apology, my questions aren't intended to be picky, I do like your idea!

Now THAT, is a very cool idea!

I've been thinking that for the first trip down the driveway, string could be stretched and lines sprayed with paint to keep things straight. With the lines as a guide you would get a better job. Just a thought.

Or use a laser and put a target over the blade:laughing:

This is not just for edging driveways. You can also use it to install underground dog fences. That's next on my list of to do projects, and I've been trying to think of an easy way to dig a 2" trench to bury the wire. Just found it!

What about using a disc from a garden or field disc? Just use one of them?

A plow coulter would be an ideal starting point. The are made to cut sod and swivel also so curves would be easy to make. This plow is for a garden tractor and is lightly built of course but clearly illustrates the coulter setup. The coulters on full sized plows are considerably heavier and would make a good starting point if one were inclined to make such an edger.

Several years ago I replaced one front wheel with a straight coulter blade with a matching bolt hole pattern. This was on a little Case 446 (16 HP)
It certainly penetrated well but a bit difficult to steer.
I would think that a depth limiting band attached to one or both sides of the blade would maintain a set depth and make for easier steering.
Would this be a viable commercial product? Probably not but sure fun to experiment with.
I need to find the picture that would be worth a thousand words.

This is a great idea-I would think that a lot of us TBN'rs will be interested.

Thanks for sharing.

Looks cool , but I was wondering why a new rim ? Old ones are everywhere

Great idea. Do you have any pics of how your driveway looks after you have used it?

Downforce is needed to get the blade down through the rock base.
