I am looking at brush hogs and some have dish pans (is that what they are called) and the blades bolt to them, others have a big bar and the blades bolt to that.

I read that dish pans help protect more, is that what I should get?

I am not going to go over anything large, 1" maybe the most, I'll just cut it down if I have to go over anything bigger. After its cut I won't have to worry about it so I don't the toughest mower i can get.

Only looking at getting a 5 foot one

Most are refered to as stump jumpers and I would want one on mower.

Why only 5'?

Yes, they are now called stump jumpers, although they used to be called dishpans too in the old days.

If you are absolutely certain that you won't be hitting anything, a blade bar is fine. But, for those times where you are mowing high grass that might contain some unseen "surprises", the stump jumper is a safer bet.

Is this mower for the JD 4020? That thing will pull a 15' batwing mower with no problem. I'll ask the same question as xfaxman, why only 5'??

I would really encourage the stump jumper / "dishpan". I was using a brush cutter with just the blade bar in a known area. While going over an existing stump "knowing the cutter was high enough to clear" one front wheel went up on a gopher pile and the blade bar caught the stump on the edge. Small bang the real quiet. Shear pin did not shear. Shaft out of the bottom of the gear box snapped off. Finally found a new shaft and seal, fixed it and traded for a newer cutter with a stump jumper!

This is for a Kioti DK45SE tractor
5ft - just because that makes cutter the same width as the tires so I will know where it is at all times. Figured that might be good to start out that way having never pulled one. Plus I really don't want to spend more than 1200-1400 for it and that seems to be in the price range for 5ft'rs.

Going to look at Land Pride rotatry cutters this afternoon as well

OK, good plan.

Here is the stump jumper on my 7' brush hog.

Out front on the Toolcat, I know where is all the time. :D

My DK45SE has the rear wheels set to the widest position with R-1 tires, and my width is just a hair over 72", so my 6' mower is the right size for it. 60" seems awfully narrow for that tractor to me, especially if you have a loader on it. That sounds more like the tread width (center of tire to center of tire) than the overall width (outside of tread to outside of tread) to me.

I've got the Kioti DK50SE, which is the same frame size as the DK45SE. As GreenWannabe said, the width is about 72" with the wheels in the widest position. Of course, your wheels may not be in the widest position.

But a 60" cutter would be fine, especially since you're just starting out. Having the cutter inside the tire width eliminates one thing to have to watch while you're learning.

A stump jumper eliminates another thing to worry about, so I'd recommend going with the stump jumper.
