305's and 306's have a short chain mount bracket bolted to the front center of the deck that provides additional chain/blade clearance. IIRC it protrudes 6-8" and is radiused similar to the blade tip path.

I've seen pictures of what you describe on newer Bush hog models. I do not think mine ever had such a setup, but then again my 305 is much older. The BH tech support guy said he could not make any sense out of my serial number, he said it was differant than all serial numbers he has seen. He even theorized I may have an early prototype.
