I got that picture from the Ohio State University Extension Fact Sheet - Entomology...... web page Just under the second paragraph. If the picture is wrong, I apologize, but I thought that they would know what it looks like and post a correct picture. Possibly there are some sub species that don't look like other?

Good article Junkman.

I will sleep real well tonight after I check the bed for spiders.

I have no problem stomping on any spider.

(I hope I don't get beat up by the spider lovers)

I was going to post a picture I took of a spider last fall but it appears to be too big of a file.

I got bit in the thigh a few years ago by a brown recluse back when I lived in Texas. I didn't know what it was at the time, so I didn't do anything about it. I took about 3+ months for the wound to heal. If I picked off the scab (sorry) even a couple of months after the bit, it felt and looked like a fresh burn. I only learned after the fact what caused this wound during a trip to the zoo. I really consider myself lucky that there wasn't any complications. I also consider myself lucky that found the black widow that was only twenty feet from the spot where the recluse bit me before she found me. I told my wife if I saw a tarantula anywhere near the house that I would be moving immediately. We moved, but it wasn't due to our 8 legged friends. We actually had a black & yellow garden spider that we almost considered a pet. This guy was about 4" leg to leg, and had a huge web by our patio. I liked him since he ate lots of bugs. Of course one day my mother-in-law killed him despite knowing our fondness for the big-guy. She said she couldn't stand it anymore. I hope I never get on her bad-side. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As far as remedies, I have no experience since I didn't treat my wound, but my mother used Bag Balm on us kids whenever we got a wound and it always seemd to work. I know it is meant for live stock, but family folklore says it will heal anything. Oh-yeah I'm not a medical doctor so please don't listen to me.

i have "heard", that if you have brown recluse, you won't have other spiders?? so i like seeing the other spiders around occasionally.

Junkman,
You might want to check this out ... http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/urban/spiders/brown_recluse_spider.htm
This site is a good source of information.
There are not to many East Coast States that don't have these. I once lived and worked in Memphis Tenn. and we worked with the city to help provide info to the public about these little guys. These things feed at night and really like living in dark places i.e., under the fridge!

Hope everything works out and please take care of that wound. My Mom had a regestered Chow that was bit on one of its front legs. It never did heal and after much money at the vet she eventualy had the dog put to sleep. Heartbreaking expierence..

an exterminator told me to keep glue traps out all the time?? that was the only way they knew of to try to control spiders.

Heehaw,

Note that the first state that article lists is arkansas.
I have not found any of these yet but boy have I found the black widows.
One day I found one that was the better part of an 1" in size, prior to being enlarged by my boot print.

I hope that recluse bit heals up quickly. That venom is like rattle snake venom, it kills the flesh around the bit.

I use the glue traps and they work great. The best kind are flat pieces of paper with very sticky glue on one side and no lip. The critter wanders on and never wanders off. Put them by the doors and you will see a decrease in the spider population.
Also work on field mice, and it is the season for them to start looking for a new home now that its getting cold.

looked at that link, i may have to try that web/mud cleaner, if it would stop the dirt dobbers from building nest on the side of a house, it would be well worth it.
