Broken rubber track

Im renting from a friend and the tracks were in horrible shape I am just looking for help in determining if this damage was operator error ?
I appreciate your opinions and help on this matter I feel bad and don't mind fixing but I told him last week tracks didn't look good and not sure if I'm 100 percent at fault .

Broke in half not operator error. Its prety hard to cut a track in half that hasn't been cut by the material its driving on.

If we could only see the condition of the tracks before one failed.

If it's really a renting situation, it's not your issue. If it's a borrowed machine, I'd say you are on the hook for at least splitting the cost of the fix with the machine owner.
