Yes, I was hanging on to a TV antenna tower with one hand, holding one of those four tine hoe like garden tools with a five foot handle trying to pull aluminum siding out from under the eaves of the 100-year old house my youngest is redoing. (Long sentence, stay silent grammar Nazis) Several pieces came down at once and one hit my safety glasses on the left lens, put a deep scratch in the glasses and cut a shallow gash in my nose.

I may have said a few words that embarrassed the sheetrockers working in the house.

But I didn't let go and fall.

Got down as soon as my wife walked around the house and threw glasses in the dumpster and got another pair from the truck. Dodged a lecture about being stupid at 67-years old.

Now my left eye is my good eye, lost the center of vision in the right one a couple years ago. If not for those glasses I might have had damage in my left and that would have stopped me from driving.

Scary!!!!

Good for you for being smart enough to wear them. I do when working with grinders and such, but wouldn't have been wearing them doing what you were doing. You are smarter at 67 than I am at 55:)

Best,

Twelve more years of experience and a strong fear of damage to my one good eye.

Understood, and just to be clear, you are absolutely correct. I used to wear prescription glasses and had a pair that were good coverage and "safety" type glass and frames, I should really just go back to wearing those all the time.

Good job wearing them in the first place!

I had a grinding wheel blow up on me; blew out my shield and glasses.
That is my constant fear using one. I am mindful that the wheels are a brittle ceramic.

I am glad that you were wearing both!

All the best,

Peter

My wife won't let me cut down "big trees". She says I'm getting to old for that.

I'm pushing the envelope as to what is a "Big Tree" ;-)

A splinter in thine own eye....a moat in the eye of another.

It only takes a moment, eh?

I wear safety glasses or shield or both when grinding and the like. I'm blind in my right eye. My eye doctor recommends Lasik surgery for my left eye. It scares me. If a mistake should be made during this surgery and I loose sight in my left eye - the world would become very dim. Right now Lasik surgery would correct my need for reading glasses only.

Looking thru my right eye is like looking thru a frosted window. No driving and very difficult to even navigate around.

Such is life .............

Good to hear you were wearing the safety glasses RSKY.

Back before I needed to wear prescription glasses, I had a similar scary incident. I was hammering a 3" finishing nail into a door jamb and it sprang back, imbedding itself it the lens of the safety glasses I was wearing! A near miss but a lesson learned.

Another here that had a grinding disc explode and trash a safety lens.
It had a nice clean line about dead center where the disc made contact.
Thankfully under Cosco insurance policy I got a free replacement.

I've been carrying ear plugs in my pocket about 10 years now, eye pro hard corps for about six, respirator anytime I'm grinding/welding or dusty for about four. Amazing how as you get less invincible you are more willing to use goofy looking stuff.

oosik, I can only highly recommend that you go forward with the Lasik surgery. Literally hundreds thousands of those have been successfully performed. I have never even heard of one going wrong.

I too, needed Lasik surgery due to acute cataracts rendering me essentially blind. Yeah, I too was skeptical (and afraid), and refused surgery. However, have the optometrist telling me that there was nothing more that he could do, I went to an Ophthalmologist. She recommended a lense replacement - in both eyes.

I proceeded with her recommendation, one eye at a time over a 6 month period. No pain, no strain. Thirty minute surgery. I've now have had better than 20-20 vision for over 3 years with zero difficulties. My only reservation is that I was a fool for NOT having this done years ago. There's nothing more precious than your vision. (Well - nearly...)

oh..., as a matter of info - Medicare covered almost all of the cost.

Also had both eyes returned to 20/20 and clear vision now.
Once done I realized that water was blue and not brown as I had previously thought.
Night driving also more enjoyable.

ah safety glasses, my wife made me buy them when I got new glasses. They are now scratched, bent, ill fitting, and otherwise less than pristine. Boards have knocked them off, goats have headbutted them off, turkey wings, bull horns, dogs, ladders, pigs, and all manner of crazy hazards had their turn at them. Still have both my eyes, though.

My MIL (97) suffered from cataracts for over a decade. Finally got both done last year. Now her leg hurts from kicking herself in the butt for not doing it a decade ago.

While brushcutting I have had items hit me hard in the safety googles.
Once hard enough to bruise me around the edge of the glasses.
Use them when cleaning saws using forced air.
Can't tell you how many times the berry thorns have hit me in the face while doing clearing.
Essential when grinding, had a friend with a metal sliver in one eye, not fun.

Glad only your glasses got really hurt and not you, guess I should be wearing them anytime on a big ladder .

Friend of mine was horribly scarred when a glass viscometer blew up in a vat of molten Potassium Hydroxide. He was wearing safety glasses, which saved his eyesight. He should have been wearing a hood, but unfortunately was not. Another friend had a similar thing happen, but he was wearing a hood. I worked in a laboratory for 16 years.
