Broadcast planting

I am planting corn in a food plot and don稚 have access to a planter. I have talked with local guys and have been told that a tiller is a great tool to plant seed like corn-sunflowers-etc Told to do this.
First roto till area. Broadcast see then with PTO OFF and tailgate down roll rototiller over seed bed. This will put dimples in the soil and plant the seed and with tail gate down it covers the seed.. I was told that a small chain drag can be attached to tiller to ensure seed is cover all the way. I was told that this works excellent for large seeds that need to be planted 2inch deep.. It works perfect and you get more out of a food plot than one with rows.. Whats your thoughts. I am going to try it..

If your crop is not in a row so you can cultivate, how are planning on keeping the weeds and grass competition under control? Ken Sweet

Ken I don't think he would need to cultivate it, sounds like he's going to mix the seeds and scatter, which would be okay for a wildlife plot.

The weeds will choke it down enough that it will not shoot a ear of corn for the wildlife. Need to spray chemicals for weed control or cultivate. Ken Sweet

What I was told is that you dont need a planter and you would get more per acre. Weeds yes but with rottotilling-- spray before planting the corn.. Then as the corn comes up it will choke out the weeds.....

I tried a similar method last year, and as Ken suggests, I got very low corn yield. The ragweed overtook the corn. Corn does not handle weed competition well at all. I sprayed a week before planting, but the ragweed was still able to take over the plot. Based on my experience, I am moving to row planting with Roundup ready seed corn, so I can spray after the corn is up about 12 inches or so.

Corn will not choke out the weeds ... the weeds will choke out the corn. Is the corn Roundup Ready? If so spray it.

If it is for food plot you'd be better off planting a legume that can handle being broadcast, like clay peas, Lab Lab, Soybeans and the like. Far superior to corn for deer.

Corn also needs good water and fertilization to make good heads, and the guy's are right on the weeds.

I would rather have some Milo or other grain mixed with a legumes for deer and turkey over any corn, especially in summer time.

2,4-D weed killer should kill the weeds? I planted 3 strips in my clover plot. One pass up and down on the cut pine slide and right thru the middle. So this would be a 3 ten foot wide strips which is still more corn than rows but leaves me room to spray and fertilize. I simply wanted to experiment around with broadcasting seeding because I dont have a planter and dont plan on getting one this year. I have had zero luck with milo around here...

2,4-D will only kill broad leaf weeds. You will have to spray with something else for grass control. Ken Sweet
