I test drove a Branson 4520 on Saturday and had a hard time shifting from one gear to the other. Stopped, clutch fully engaged. Just wouldn't easily drop out of gear. The salesman finally moved into the driver's seat to try after trying from the ground for a minute or so. He finally got it out of gear after a lot of easing on the clutch. Actually, there was some definite gear grinding when it finally popped out of gear.

I liked the tractor a lot, but wonder if this is common with new units...believe it had 5.5 hours on it. Or if this could be a problem specific to this unit.

Also wondered if it might be related to the issue noted in JonMark's post of 6/24.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Perhaps this is one of the items that related to a lower price.

No, that is not common and there must be an issue with that tractor. In fact many dealers and customers have told me they shift better then many of the majors. Like any other tractor they are mechanical and built by people and although not often they can have a problem. They are an excellent product and I am confident you would be very happy with one. Did you ask the dealer about it? Maybe the clutch is out of adjustment.

Hey L-J,
Which shifter was stuck? The one to the drivers left is the range selector. It is not synchronized. Sometimes you have to ease out on the clutch just enough to move the tractor to get everything lined up. The one on the right is synchronized, smooth as silk.
Hope this helps.
Ken.

I had some problems at first with my 3510, but with the shuttle shift going into forward. After a hour or so on the machine, everything has worked to perfection. Talked to 4 other Branson owners in the area (2810, (2) 3510s, and (1) 4520) -- none of them have had problems.

that's the problem.
The range selector on the left is not synchronized, and you've got to stop.
The gear selector on the right is synchronized, and mine shifts smoothly.

Select the range, then feel free to shift around within it, but if you've got to change the range, stop the tractor.

Mine shifts fine 3820, but sometimes you may need to
let the clutch out a bit and move it just a tad to get it to shift.
My tractor is 5 days old now, not a bad word to say
about it yet /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Anthony,

Not being stopped was not the issue. I was fully stopped...as my original post says.

I have a Century 3045 and occasionally the range selector is difficult to disengage. What I found is while the tractor is running and the clutch is depressed, partially release the clutch and pull the range selector out of gear at the same time. This is an intermittent issue for me and doesn't seem to be any sort of real problem, more of an idiosyncrasy, I guess? (At least I hope /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif)
