I agree it's from the dealer installing the block heater. Hate to say it, but they pooched it by forgetting to top it off again. Sounds like about the right amount of coolant to come out when installing the block heater.

On the plus side, you only ran it a few minutes. Also on the plus side, your engine has a cast iron block and a cast iron head. These take longer to heat up, heat up more evenly (less "hot spots" than aluminum), and are much harder to warp or crack than aluminum castings. Also you have a full 2 year warranty on everything, and I think 6 year power train.

If there is a problem, it will rear it's head very soon, probably would see signs of it NOW, not years down the road. And it will be covered.

Should it have happened? No. No it shouldn't have.

But I think you'll be fine.

Aggravating to be sure though.

Thanks for the info slowpoke slim. What do I need to look for if there is an issue?

/ Brand 5220ch overheated #23
There would be several possible symptoms, in no particular order:

Rough idle/rough engine running

Loss of engine power/engine runs "tight", doesn't want to rev or stops spinning "instantly" when shut off

Engine oil that looks like chocolate milk

Engine coolant level keeps dropping/keep having to add

Constant white smoke out of exhaust pipe

Droplets of engine oil in coolant/steady stream of air bubbles coming up through radiator to neck

On an iron casting diesel engine, I think you'd have had to run it for a while to have any damage.

Thanks again slowpoke for the info. I’ll keep an eye out. Funny thing is I didn’t even ask for a block heater they just installed it

I would ask for a extended warranty on the engine just to be safe....:2cents:

He's got a 6 year power train, what in the heck do you think he's going to get.
From the sound of he caught it before it got hot.
I doubt that the dealer ran it long enough to even start to get it warm.

Well no matter what, I sent the dealer, and Branson an email today. Told them I would like to have it documented on Branson end , so if anything happens that would be related to over heating, they don’t turn around and blame me for miss use or lack of Maintenance. I’ll let everybody know what they say if I get a response. At this point dealer never responded back to email. I found on Branson global web site listed email for head us and their main email address. I sent it to them with dealer attached. We will see.

If you only ran it for a "few minutes" you did no damage. Other than the shoddy dealer part you shouldn't worry. I suppose you've never overheated a car or pickup motor. Did it just ruin it. I got my Dodge Cummins hot on a long steep grade pulling a heavy load didn't even notice until bells starting dinging and I saw the needle was pegged, I was just at the crest so let her continue as the road started down a bit and the truck cooled quickly as I got out of the throttle. Turned out it was a partially plugged radiator fins. Let's see, that was about 80,000 miles back. truck still runs fine and I haven't had any problems with it. With proper maintenance these things will run 10,000hrs that's why they can afford to give a 6 year warranty. Most "hobbyists" wont put over 1000 hrs in that time. I like that model tractor you bought very nice. Hope you enjoy it for many years, trouble free of course...

I would like to post pictures of it , but I can never get them to work

You can upload pics directly from your pc to the forum if you wish.

In the "reply" box, the 3rd icon from the right looks like a small picture of a tree. Click that, and a separate box pops up, click the "computer" tab on that box, then "browse", then go to the folder you have the picture saved in (on your pc), click on that picture's .jpg file, then click "upload file".

That's the method I use anyway.

There was a batch of "bad" head gaskets, make sure they check your S# with Branson USA. Symptoms are occasional overheating and coolant lose without seeing/finding any leaks. The tractors run surprisingly well even with the faulty head gasket.
Sorry, it sucks having a issue with something brand new.

Mine is a 2020. Know what year effective?

We warrantied one last year, I think the machine was sold in early 2018. Don't know what the s# range is, we just call and check before starting any diag.

Called Branson today, they did get my email and are looking into it. Takman what Symptoms did they have with the coolant leak? I’m pretty sure mine was just some buddy not filling the tank backup. Also mite be a dumb question what does the exhaust smell like? Mine kinda smells like a sweet propane type of smell. I don’t see any brown in the mixed in with the coolant. I have 3 hours on the unit and the oil is a very light grey/blackish. This seem normal? Thanks

Tak,

Can you at least tell the guy what engine series was involved in the "bad gasket" recall?

Help a guy out to narrow it down some?

It can't be "all of them".

HK,

I do think you'll be fine. I seriously doubt you ran it long enough to damage anything. If it had been an aluminum casting head and block, or worse, an aluminum head on an iron block, I would be more worried about it.

But the cast iron engines are more forgiving in this area, it does take them longer to heat up, they tend to heat more evenly across the entire casting, and that makes them much less prone to warping than aluminum.

Just don't go making a habit of this...

Thanks slowpoke, I’m probably fine I just have bad ocd so I dwell on things. My owner’s manual doesn’t have anything about warranty. The tractor has stickers 6 years, but how many hours is it?

Bumper to Bumper 2 years or 1000 hrs
Power train and engine 6 years or 2000 hrs whichever comes first.
