im thinking of spring projects, one is to spread about 30 yards of loam for a new level lawn bed. thinking of getting a box blade for my jd 2305 my question is what size for this small machine does anyone have experience with this machine set up ? I like the eta 54" unit , is this to big?? I also run turf tires...

I typically use my fel to spread topsoil on a new lawn area, and back drag in float position to even the spread. I would recommend a 48" box blade or a maximum of 54". Might wan't to look at a Cammond pictured below on my mower.

Pulling a Box Blade is high draft work. As you have Turf Tires, consider a Landscape Rake in lieu of a Box Blade. Landscape Rakes require less traction to pull. A Landscape Rake's spring tines are designed for spreading.

I have ETA's 72" Landscape Rake which I would highly recommend; not so keen on ETA's imported gauge wheels for the Landscape Rake. However gauge wheels, in the generic sense, are efficient for final smoothing without using a manual, long-handled rake in your hands.

You would want to buy a Landscape Rake twelve inches wider than your tractor tire width, as Landscape Rakes are most often used angled to some degree.

(I own both a Rollover Box Blade and the ETA Landscape Rake.)

Here are some relevant threads from the T-B-N archive:

I have the 48" Frontier behind my 2305; debated for days how big to go. Advice here leaned toward the 48" due to the size/traction on the scut. I'm glad I stayed at 48", moved lots of dirt last summer and pushed the setup to its limit. Getting a 60" rear blade, mostly for moving snow in combo with a front SB.

I have a Land Pride 54" that I use with my JD2210(older version of the 2305) and think it is a good match for the tractor as long as I have the loader on the front. I also run turf tires, you shouldn't have any trouble moving loose soil. I have busted up old compacted landscape beds with the scarfiers and did not have traction issues there either.

I bought mine used for a good price and would have gone 48" or 54" depending on what showed up first. If you have to buy new and the price is close, based on using the 54" it is what I would choose.

I run a 60" on my JD2210. Only because I used to have a larger CUT that I pulled it with. It handles it, but it's a load. I like the width for leveling. I run 250lbs of front weights when using it.

I'm with bullockcm, I think a 54" is a good match for tractors this size. I like the blade to run outside of my tractor far enough that I can clean/smooth material along a curb or whatever without worrying about gouging a tractor tire.

I bought a Land Pride box blade for my 2305 years ago when the salesman was new to the job. He said he called a Land Pride representative and was told to go with a 48" because the 54" would be to big in hard ground.
