Box Scraper Box blade opp. Will it work for me?

Thanks John_bud. I've been talking to a Woods dealer trying to find the rear blade and noticed that all the ones he has in his catalogs have a straight rear blade. There is also a backing support bar. I presume I'll need that too? There is a "kink" in the hinge plate where it looks like such a bar would sit.

Probably so for support. Can you just get a grader blade and attach it to the existing back blade and over-hang it 1" or so? Just enough to clear the bent section?

The guy I bought it from has an 8' straight blade off a snow plow that he'll sell me cheap. Would have to cut to size and drill new holes in the hinge plated to match. Concern is that I'd like to get the cutting edge depth set right and I don't know what that is. Don't know if the plow blade is even the same width. So while I'm at the dealer getting pricing and what not on new parts, I plan to measure the depth of the back blade relative to the backing plate on what he has in stock.

Can anyone who knows share what the distance is from the bottom of the backing plate to the bottom of the cutting edge for their rear setup? Is it different for fixed vs. hinged rear? I'm afraid if I don't get this right, it's not gonna work correctly.

On my hinged Howse BB, both blades rest on the ground while the "box" is sitting level.

I gave the dimensions to the dealer today. He said that most likely they can match it up. There are 6 holes, 13" on center, starting 1-7/16 "from each end. They are centered 1-3/8" up from the bottom of the hinged plate.

The backing adapter plate price is painfully pricey: $77 with the blade running another $137. Ouch! But the backing adapter I think is needed to protect the thin hinged plate. I think it both stiffens and acts as a bushing of sorts. It is drilled to match the blade hole pattern and (I'm told) is also made from hardened steel. It looks like it sets right in the kink bends built into the hinged plate.

I continue to get ready. Decided to use POR-15 on it. Then POR primer and an overcoat of duplicolor DE1620 (simulated Kioti orange paint). I ordered the POR products today and wiped out NAPA's supply of orange paint, plus ordered 3 more cans. I looked into OEM Kioti paint: twice the price. Not sure it's twice better. The POR-15 is what really counts here anyway.

I have also been looking for a Box scraper. I have a Kubota L4300 DT, 43 Hp, The manual says it will handle a 5 ft box Scraper. I just came across an add for one "gill boxscraper for 3 pt. hitch 65" wide x 30" deep." What should I look for besides the scarifer teeth? How much is it worth? These are the only pictures I have right now.

That Gill looks to be about the same vintage as mine. I don't see any scarifiers. They will cost you about $27 a piece. My 6' has eight of them. Also, pay attention to how they are held in place. Some designs use proprietary spring clips that may be hard to find. Others use pins or sliding bars.

Other than that:

Check for broken welds
Check for any bent or broken places
reinforced corners are nice
thickness of side plates
wear on bottom edge of side plates (skid plates here are good)
cutting edge wear and whether it has been turned over or not

Not one of them has been honest and told you what a piece of junk that BB is and if I were you, I'd be embarrassed to have it on my place.

Oh Yeah? Well when I finish refurbishing it, you can come and get it. But it'll cost ya...... like $700 or so. Well worth the trip all the way to Maryland, I think. Or I'll trade you even for that dump trailer of yours.

Shoot if you want one, get that one that is being mentioned in another thread with hydraulics. That's a real nice one, for sale right there in Texas.

A replacement blade has been identified and is now on order. And it turns out that I don't need the backing piece afterall. That saved me like $80 right there. When it's all refurbished I'll probably have close to $450 in it. Not so cheap in the end. But, I'll have a real heavy duty piece of equipment that will outlast me.
