Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

First off HI to everyone.
I have a 4710 and am in need of a box blade. I'm looking at the Frontier medium duty but am unsure of which length to buy. It takes 6' minimum to cover the wheel tracks but I would prefer the 7' if my tractor would handle it easily enough.
Does anyone have a 7' and if so how big a tractor are you using.
Thanks

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

I was told that in most cases the idea is to go wider than the tractor by a decnt margin. This helps in getting up close to objects.

I am picking up a BB1172 next weekend. I've found Frontier pricing to be kinda wacky. I got mine for under $900 if that helps. Woods is the identical unit. The idea of the floating tailgate appealed to me.

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

Go with the 7'er! That tractor has enough gonads to pull it. I bought a Woods HB84 last summer. I paid $800. It is rated for a higher HP tractor. (seems like 75 or 80?????) I use it on a 60 HP 2440 Deere. The biggest advantage of the heavier duty box is the built-in weight. I especially like the Woods design on the ripper teeth. Very positive, solid mounting.

I haven't looked at the Frontier (sp) version, but I've been told it is identical to the Woods.

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

Yeah, you guys are right about it being identical, my frontier RB came with a owners manual that said it was made by woods, so I assume frontier brand is made by woods to be John Deere Friendly...
My real concern is if my tractor truly does have the "Gonads" to efficiently handle the 7" BB with all 7 rippers engaged. Seems like a lot to ask of it...

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

My 6 foot BB fits inside my 6 foot bucket and allows me load up and trailer the tractor with the landscape rake on the 3 point. For me it is convenient.

You might have a traction issue due to tractor weight and tire foot print to get the full benefit of the extra capacity.

Thats why in some ways 4720 powerplant doesnt make sense to me.

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

well guys, first off thanks for the advice. I happened to luck into a dealer you had a 7 footer in stock and was willing to deal. He said it had been setting outside for about a year so I expected it to be all sun faded and rusty but the price he quoted me on the phone made it worth it. I made a 2 hour drive south and once I got there I was suprised to see that the blade was still in the crate and looked like brand new (not my normal luck) so I give her a quick once over and we loaded it up. Now all I need is a good top and tilt kit......

Darinah4710, I might suggest you look into the Hoelscher RB-6' http://www.hoelscherinc.com/prod_rbscraper.htm It is a very heavy unit and well worth the price. It works seperate of the tractor meaning no batter what angel the tractor is on it will stay level.

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

darinah, you probably need to reduce the size a lot. Send a PM to Henro I think it was he who pointed me to a nifty free photo reducing tool called faststone photo resizer it may be on downloads.com not sure. There are a bunch of programs out there that will work the faststone is just real simple which is good for me as my honey does all the computer typesetting at our print shop and she's not terribly patient with me sometimes when I'm trying to explain what I need her to do for me unless its business related.

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

I have to say I am glad I took Indy's advice and went with the 7', the mass of this thing is incredible. It weighs 739lbs. The floating tailgate makes it really nice for finish grading, this was my first experience with the floating tailgate and I like it. I volunteered to help a neighbor cut down a 4' tall hump in his yard today not knowing really if my rig was up to it...WoW I was impressed. My little 4710 only stuggled with the heaviest cuts and then only ran short on traction, not power.. Excellent buy and am looking forward to working it some more...

Re: Box Blade 6\' or 7\'

Glad to be of service sir! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That is identical to my Woods box, with the exception of color. Even has the "thermos bottle" owners manual holder. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Weight is the key to a box blade's working well. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Looks good! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Why do I suspect that what few "hills" there are in mid-Indiana are about to be leveled...???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

ENJOY! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
