What do y'all use along with a boom pole to lift things? If it's chain, what kind and length? I'm going to get one and since it's a long trip into TSC, I want to make sure I get all I'll need while I'm there. Thanks.

Yes buy two flavors...

One - 14´ x 3/8" Tow Chain &
One - 20´ x 5/16" Tow Chain...

The 3/8" chain capacity will far exceed just about any boom pole rating... and of course now you can use the chains for other duties... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I'd add 2 - 6' long 1/4" tag chains to that kit... real handy for holding things in the bucket etc

Mike, also think about adding an eye type grabhook onto the boompoles' endloop using a hammerlock connector. Makes for a quick and secure point to anchor the chain to.

DFB,

Comes apart like this.

In logging they use them to connect grab links to the log slides on the winchline.

Hi John,

I just did a search for tractor tool kit, and got no hits. What else is in your tool kit??

p.s. I've been reading all the links and messages you've posted about tractor safety, and I want to thank you, sincerely, for your efforts. I'm fairly sure you've saved some lives, although you may never know it.

Regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

Thank you. I’m glad you got something out of it… most of the time us “adults” are set in our ways and are afraid of change or are so use to doing the same thing, time and time again {whether right or wrong, safe or not!}.

Around the beginning of summer, I had received a heart warming e-mail from a father telling me about his 12 year old daughter had downloaded many pictures and articles from that “Safety Tips” forum and used the material for a project…I believe for 4-H… anyways she won the grand prize and award for her presentation… /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

I was so happy and proud of the girl, I emailed her and her Dad back… now that girl and those young people she touched, will end up saving countless lives and preventing needless amputations & lifelong crippling injuries because of her project and the safety lessons they will use on a daily basis…{and these kids will never realize how much of a difference they will make either!} /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

We all should practice safety for life…

John, what grade chain do you recommend? I was browsing through my AW Direct catalog and there's a lot to choose from...at greatly varying prices /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Hi Mike...

Grade 70 or 80 is probably the most popular (& stocked)... even a lesser grade would suffice... 'cause most any chain will far exceed the boom lift capacity... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thanks, John. Grade 40 is the least expensive. AWDirect prices;

G40 20' 5/16" - $34.00
G70 - $43.00
G80 - $105.00

I assume the chains would work just as well with FEL hooks?

Mike...

Don't hold me to it... but you should be able to purchase Grade 70 - 14' lengths for under $30 (TSC?)... & at auctions under $20... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

(Remember, you can also use the higher grade chains for other duties as towing etc...)

I snaped an economy 1/4 chain pulling a tree with my M6800. Now I have a 1/4" chain, grade called "system 7". I think it is like the strongest grade. Now the tractor spins the tires before the chain breaks.

It is easier to handle and store a smaller chain. It is as strong as and costs the same as a bigger chain of lower quality.

Get a piece of box tubing and weld a floor in it. Bolt it on to existing tapped holes and you have a convienent chain bucket. One on each side of my tractor. Leave a 3/16" slot on each side of the floor for water, leaves to drain.

Hi John
My wife is a retired college professor who's specialty is communications - the subject everyone loves to hate until they realize it is a skill that is constantly in use. She has often said "we never know the extent of our influence" and, just as I am sure that is the case with many of her former students, I believe it is also the case with the safety information you so generously pass along. This young lady's project is a testimonial to that fact and is another example of the many positive contributions made by many TBN members.

Thanks.

Bob
