Boiling Fuel

I'v kind of made it a habit that if my tractor, chainsaw, weed eater, push mower, etc... runs out of fuel, its a good time to have a rest, a beverage, and a snack before refueling. Gives things a chance to cool down.

MR, that's a habit I need to follow. I pulled her onto the trailer once and decided to fuel her before parking it out back. I spilled a bit of fuel and whoosh! Ball of flame. I had an extinguisher on the tow vehicle, so I put it out right quick and suffered only melted fan fins and extinguisher dust everywhere and some singed eyebrows. New kind of pt pucker factor. Now I only fuel BEFORE I use her.

Oh, believe me, I used to be impatient, shut things down and refuel right away.... but after reading so many stories about fires, hot refueling, boat fires, etc... I just take a break and let it cool down.

Another example is if I know I'll have to jump start or connect a sparky hot lead, etc.... I'll refuel, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes as I want any fumes in the tub to go away before I spark.

Plus, I like snacks and beverages, and, as I get older, I can feel myself being tired, and when you're tired, you make mistakes. So take a break, rehydrate, check the ol' celly for weather, sports, TBN, family, etc... and then go back to work.

Good advice Moss. I've gotten better at letting things cool down, but it's still an effort at times.

I have found that when I run out of fuel it is always as physically far away from the fuel can as possible.......so by the time I have finished cursing, walked all the way back to get the can and walked back to the tractor things have cooled down......I have also noticed that whenever I run out of fuel the 5 gal can is always full so I have to carry the full weight.........lol......Jack

Hahaha, nice!

I've been contemplating putting in a 2-position valve at the bottom of my fuel tank like you'd find on a motorcycle, where when you start running out of gas, you flip it to the reserve setting and have a quart or two left to get to a gas station, or in our case, the gas can.

Anyone else consider this? Or telling PowerTrac to add it to their new builds?
