Bobbed Deuce

Definitely not a highway speed truck at 48 MPH top speed but a great farm truck or back roads vehicle. I recently sold my 1 1/2T Chevy (not 4x4 and 6.17 gearing). Loved the truck but could not keep up with my buddies on the highway driving to car shows. Price isn't bad either but adding the options to the price can be a deal breaker.

That totally depends on the age of the machine. The later turbo models will cruise along at 65mph, even with a load. The older pre-turbo models were definitely a pooch.

I've used the turbo models in the Southwest Asia deserts, hauling wayyyyyy more than their designated capacity, with no problems. Very dependable trucks. Just understand, they are crude, no frills. :)

An example of crudeness. The trans is a 5 speed. R forward, 1 rearward are in the first shifter gate. 2 forward, 3 rearward are in the center gate. 4 rearward, 5 forward are in the right gate. See an oddity there???? :)

Reading his website , he at least has clear title ?? I see a lot of the big farms / ranches in that area use the 2.5 tons , guess mainly off road ??? Also see a lot of the 1.25 ton trucks running around , but rarely see them at this guys place . Maybe a project for after I win the lottery :D

That reversed 5th pattern was pretty common, the pic I found is Spicer but I want to say some eaton/fuller had that too?

Some say the thought behind the shift pattern is the shift lever is out of the way for the middle passenger while cruising down the road.

I think for whatever reason it just came out that way inside.

Kinda like what's known as a "working 4th" setup. A 5 speed tranny and 2spd rear axle. 1st gear low axle then high axle. 2nd gear low axle then high axle. 3r gear low axle then high axle. 4th gear low axle. 5th gear low axle. 4th gear high axle. 5th gear high axle.

That 4-5 arrangement would be a tad confusing. :confused2:

Wouldn't 5th be a road gear that you used after you really got rolling? 4th is where you spent most of your road time and when you went into 5th it was a conscience choice at higher speeds? If so, the shift up would feel natural and like it was by design rather than accident. An "overdrive" kind of shift. I could be wrong because I never had one, but I recall similar setups that I think were made that way on purpose.

I bought a deuce several years ago when they were still available from government auctions - maybe they still are, I haven't looked lately.

I got mine from a guy that was buying three at a time from the Redstone Arsenal sales (I think). He would buy them, fix whatever minor problems they had, and flip them for a little profit.

When I went to look at mine, he had it and one that he had bobbed. I drove both, but since I wanted to be able to haul more material in my bed, I decided to go with the 6 wheel version.

I added a dump bed to it and have used it many, many time hauling stuff around the farm.

It is relatively crude and slow, but I haven't gotten it stuck yet.

I think they hold the re-sale pretty good. I've been offered far more than I've paid for mine, I just have no interest in selling it yet.

Good luck and take care.
