My 2420 with the ty290 engine is blowing a fuse everytime I try to use the glow plugs. I have hooked them up one at a time to see if one might be bad but still the same problem. Any help would be great. Thanks

Well first, make sure you're protecting them with the right size fuse. For the 3 cylinder, it's 30 amps. Not sure what size goes in the 2 cylinder - but I'd guess the fuse panel layout is probably similar. If that's ok, disconnect BOTH glow plugs and try again. If the fuse still blows - the problem is likely either a shorted feed wire or a bad keyswitch

Does the machine turn over if you turn the key to the right instead of the left? (i.e does it pop the fuse on the start circuit or just if you hit the glow plug position and hold it)

I have replaced the fuse with a 30 amp fuse and it still will blow. If I unhook the glow plugs it will not blow the fuse.

It will only blow the fuse if you turn the switch to activate the glow plugs. Thanks for you replies

Replace them. Last I looked, they were about $15 bucks a pop.

The other thing you might want to try is get an inline fuse holder (with at least 12 gauge wire) and attach it to a piece of 10 gauge wire which you then run from the glow plug position on the switch directly to the glow plugs. The wire that you take off (on the 284 its green if I remember right) is taped off and can be used later if you choose as an indicator light lead. The original wire to the plugs is pretty light gauge and may be part of the problem. just a thought

When you disconnected them.. did you just pull the wire from the buss.. or from the switch.. try it both ways.. might still be a shorted feed wire.

will it not-blow with either of them hooked up.. but yes when both?

The buss on my 3 cylinder is just a copper bar. Make sure a nut or something else metal did not get under it and short it out. It can not be touching the metal of the block anywhere.

Like to know what you found! You have a dead short through the plugs or strap to ground. Did you replace the plugs or make sure the power didn't reach the engine block past the plug?
