Pulled the (heavy, oomph!) rear tire first, and supported with a jack stand.

Here is a phot of the plug where the heater has to go. I pulled the parking brake rod out of the way for better access here.

Final install of Trans heater. I used the clamp to hold the wire and a cable tie near the ac plug to keep it from flying around.

John - Thanks mucho for the great photos and instructional text. I take it the heater fits inside the transmission screen? When you get a moment can you post the part number of the complete kit for the Transmission Oil Heater. I see the individual components on JD Parts, but not the kit. BTW it appears the same unit is used for many JD CUTs including the 670/770 (not listed for the 790, but I'd bet it fits fine). Thanks.

Sorry if I'm missing something.. I just scanned the thread briefly as I don't have a 990...

But...

Why not just drop by the JD dealer and ask them where it goes? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi

The trans heater does fit into the suction strainer cover. The JD mechanic showed me the right place. JD did not list a kit number.

I was able to swap the cover plug and heater and only lose about 4 -6 oz of trans fluid. Get everything set and go for it ! Put a bucket underneath for the excess..

The trans parts are:
AR94493 Heater Element $43.50
AR95434 AC plug and Wire $12.75
R34557 Clamp Z34587 $1.50

Good luck All
John

Thanks for the great pics. I don't have the trans heater but it seems easy enough to install. How easy is it to plug it in with the tire on?

I was thinking the same thing ,hate the idea of wreslin' the tire off and on , with the wheel weights and all ........... Wondering if I can jack up that side and sneak it in without a gush of oil to worry about ...

Bill - I don't know when you last changed the tranny/hydraulic fluid and cleaned the screen/filter, but when I did mine a few months ago, the screen really needed to be cleaned.

BTW this tranny plug is MUCH easier to remove than the block plug heater, however you do need something large enough to catch all the oil. Just a thought...
