Having done this in the past.. (having scored the shell around the wad and firing it through a straight tube barrel) I can say it's not harmful in my experience. That's not to say the next one wouldn't have blown the barrel off the shotgun, but it didn't do any harm that we could see, other than a hel* of an ugly hole in whatever we shot at.

I wouldn't recommend it for hunting anything, but it makes a nice "demolition round".

The straight tube barrel was a Winchester 37 single shot sawed off to 24 inches. Makes a deadly bird/rabbit gun. I still have it.

Back when I was in my 30s some hunting friends would use this technique to get geese to rise off a lake. Drop a few of the cut ends into the water and away they fly. You would be surprised how far a cut end will fly. We used the shot shells that had the clear case and you could see the insides and knew where to cut.

Most turkey Shoots I been to in the last 10 years havd always required the participants to use the same shells, theirs.

+1 Same here, but unless closely watched - some folks took just a moment to "fix" their shell, change a choke tube, etc., etc.
