Best on line \"small\" tool store?

Hello everyone, I hope I have this in the right place on the forums.

I am looking on getting a Dewalt 4 1/2" grinder, see link below.

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=58972-70-D28402K&lpage=none

So I was thinking of getting this grinder on line somewhere to save a few $s (I hope). Point of the thread, tools are one thing I have never bought on line, so I have no clue who to go with. Sure I could do a Google search, but sometimes it is best to ask before going with any on line store.

So, could you all give me some places you have gone to and let me know what you think of them. Thanks.

The one warning, whether in a BigBoxStore or online:

Check, double ckeck and triple check, all the numbers [specs, model, serial, all of them] to make sure it is what you think you're getting.

Just last summer, my wife found that even on a "cheap" cordless set, a certain store disgused an even cheaper version and advertised a "sale" price.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

Yes that is one thing I have found out already, but believe it or not it has to do with that link about for Lowes... I went on the Dewalt site and found out the Model: D28402K is only 7 1/2 amps, but Lowes says it is 10 amps. I guess it is possible Lowes has Dewalt kick the amps up, just like how Sears has somethings upgraded or most of the time downgraded.

Looking around the net "most" on lone shops do show the right 7 1/2 amps for the same product, but all but one are around the same price as Lowes. The one I found was only around $55.00 which to me kind of puts up a flag that somethings isn't right with that.

So at this point I better go to Lowes and see what this really is 10amp or 7 1/2 amps, because if Lowes has the 10 amp for that price, that is a DEAL.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

I buy my tools from ToolCrib, and have had very good luck over the years with them. Several DeWalt tools as well.

tool crib grinder

This should take you to the grinder you are looking at, and appears shipping is free. And says it is 10A. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
On looking further, I also found the D28402K (may mean it has a carrying case) for the same price at
tool crib grinder with K in code

At the DeWalt site, they show this as a new product, and it is 10A there as well.
Dewalt site grinder

I have one and it is a very good tool.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

Thanks for the info... I guess my bad, this is where I got the info I was talking for amps...

http://www.dewalt.com/us/products/tool_detail.asp?productID=254

and this is the "parent" site (I was looking at the number DW 402k thinking the rest of the numbers just were added for retail on lowes site and others)...

Well so far it looks to be best to still go to Lowes and just pay the tax, the little extra is worth it just in case something is wrong with it, easier to return it.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

I will second the Tool Crib as a place to buy. I have purchased most of my tools in the last few years from them. At times they had $25 off and free shipping. I always go with the free shipping. Even though they claim it will take up to 9 days for delivery. Item is at my door by Friday if ordered on Monday. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Steve;
I have used Tool King several times. They have great deals sometimes on refurbished tools. Also they have free shipping specials every now and then. Here is your grinder.

I have been using Northern Tools for years. Once you order they send you catalogs and catalogs and more catalogs.

Tool Crib catalogs outnumber Northern Tool catalogs by 3 to 1. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Maybe there is a downside to ordering from either one. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

I had a Dewalt 4 1/2 inch grinder. I bought it brand new at Home Depot several years ago. I never used it very much, just some light grinding and only changed the wheel one time.

Then I had a pretty big project and needed to do a fair amount of grinding. After about half an hour it died on me. It got really hot, smelled weird and died. I let it sit for a few hours, but it didn't help. I bought Dewalt because I thought it was a good quality tool. I also have a drill and circular saw made by them, so I thought it was a safe buy.

I threw it away and bought an el cheepy Nakita. That's a correct spelling. I've run that $30 grinder for hours and hourse. I've put several dozen wheels on it and it's still just as strong as the day I bought it.

We have a discount tool store here in Tyler that sells stuff similar to Harbor Freight. In fact, he prices his stuff based on their catalog.

Anyway, I'd look at other grinders before buying Dewalt.

Good luck,
Eddie

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

I have used Amazon.com , ToolCrib, ToolKing, and also bought stuff at HD and Lowes. The thing I have found with HD is that not every store carries the same stuff. I went looking for a Bosch rotating hammer drill last year and there was only 1 out of the 4 HD stores I looked at even carried the model I was looking for. Looking at Amazon is a good place to start - you will usually not find a much lower price than what they give you. Use the Amazon price as a reference point to see whether the local places are in the ballpark. In my experience some HD's and local tool stores have prices that can be close enough to online prices that it isn't worth waiting and paying the shipping if you want the product right away.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

My Dewalt is like that one, except that it doesn't have the quick change. I bought it about 2 years ago. I have lost count how many discs that I have used up, but I have used more cut-off discs than grind discs. If I had to buy again, it would be an other Dewalt.

Tool catalogs are my favorite "no brain" reading material. I look forward to their arrival and then just page through them for something to do.

Re: Best on line \"small\" tool store?

Thanks everyone for the input. I thought about what to get and I ended up with the grinder I was talking about from Lowes. Wow what a little monster. if you really don't hold on to that thing it will fly out of your hand. I also love the case it came with, protects the grinder really nice (can NOT move around in there) and the spot for 10 wheels or more (has a stud that holds them). After looking on line at the different places I thought it would be best to go to Lowes, it wasn't worth the few less dollars to me if something was wrong with it to send it back to a on line place.

Again thanks to everyone for all your post.
