You could try removing the master link before cutting the chain. From your description I think there's too much tension to allow that, but maybe not. To remove it, finish sliding the clip off, pry off the outer plate, and push the two pins out through the two inner links being held together. Putting some blocks behind the chain might help, and would a pin punch.

Even if you can remove the chain without cutting, I'd suggest replacing it. Otherwise it could happen again.

Could be. You'd have to know what a new one was like. Some roller chain tensioners have raised parts in the center for the rollers to ride on. They last longer that way vs rubbing on the side plates. The raised part in the center on this one might be original or it might be worn down.

I did finally took out the master link and removed the chain , cleaned it as best I could. Now the next step is 1: try to reinstall the same chain 2: get a new chain and replace the old one. Not sure if the old chain is still usable or not. i do appreciate all the replies and help. I am a neophyte as far as the mechanics go but I will give it a try.

When I have a nut or bolt that will not loosen I put the breaker
bar on and wack it with a rubber mallet it seems to work better
than using a 5 lb hammer

So now I am trying to put the chain together but can’t. The master link holes just do not line up, just couple of mm off. Even though the chain is not under any tension. Any suggestions or tricks how to accomplish this?

Family issues came up. How do I relieve the tension on the chain to remove the sprockets to fix this problem
