Well the inevitable is happening. My XR4040 needs a new battery; it's about 4 3/4 yrs old. Two questions for anyone who has replaced theirs - 1) As a matter of curiosity, what kind of battery
is it (?) AGM or sealed flooded. 2) Where did you buy it?

I spent an hour today between Advance Auto, Auto Zone and NAPA and still haven't made a purchase. I know it is Group 24 battery but dimensions are critical, considering where the thing lives, and not all Group 24's are exactly the same size.

Another gotcha is the location of the posts - every battery I looked at was configured the same relative to the posts - just opposite of the "Rocket" oem battery.

The hunt for the perfect battery goes on!

Well checking out the "Rocket" battery it's a very good quality unit and I wish there was an outlet for that brand. It's a "sealed flooded" old school battery with the condenser built in the top like the old Delco (GM) batteries. Great design. Personally I would buy the best "sealed" battery I could get that would fit in the box and if I had to buy new longer cables to reverse the post locations I would do that. Just my two cents worth after 45 years in the automotive business.

Merry Christmas.

I agree with mslisaj. In Florida you should not see conditions that require massive CCA from your battery. For sure, get some brand of sealed battery. Around the property I always have need for a big battery for many things. So at 8 years I pulled the OEM battery on the Kubota and sprung for an Odyssey group 31.

I keep a battery maintainer on this battery thru the winter.

Yes, and put a battery maintainer on it.

My local auto parts store has always been able to match up a battery for me even if they did not have a listing.

Buying cables, as mslisaj suggested can get a little expensive if you buy quality. I just replaced the ground cable on my JD garden tractor and it was $20 for a 16" cable at my preferred auto parts store!

Don't discount OEM either. If you have an LS dealer near by, it would be worth a look. Back in the day when I was a heavy equipment tech, the dealerships I worked at were very competitive on whole goods such as batteries.

Check with someone at the parts store that knows batteries on the pole location. When I bought a battery a few years ago it seemed that almost all sizes had two part numbers , one for each pole orientation.

Measure the space you have and go looking for a rough service battery.

Yes, and put a battery maintainer on it.

The one I picked up has optional cables for direct connection to the battery with ring terminals, or a plug that goes in to the 12V accessory outlet. Is there a preference?

I would go direct to battery. 12V accessory receptacles are not designed for charging. The quality of standard accessory receptacles is all over the place.

I might consider using a Powerlet since they are quality and heavier duty.

When I replace my 861D Ford battery I bought a Marine Starting battery which I have been very happy with so far. It has good cranking amps for my diesel, but mainly for me, holds a charge longer than norma car batteries that I've used in the past have. Sometimes my tractor will sit a long time between uses and the Marine battery has not let me down yet.
