Tractor
Kubota L3400 w/FEL
Ok, so I have owned this tractor since September and haven't done anything but add fuel. I bought it with 123 hours on it and have put on about 24 hours. It has a FEL and a newly purchased Land Pride bushhog.

So where do I learn what basic maintenance needs to be done. Should I buy a shop manual? I am somewhat handy-- what can I do myself? where do I start? How do I learn?

You only need the basic Operator's Manual... Did you get one with the tractor? Do you know what had been done in the past to it?

I would at least get a parts breakdown for the tractor. It helps to get to know how it is put together. You can get a free copy at TRACTSMART Choose manuals then L series then fill out the forms and include all of the KUBOTA equipment you have that has a manual like your loader. They will email you a link to download the parts manual in PDF and its a free service.

Check your filters, and tell us what color they are, if they are grey, they never have been changed, if white or something else, they have been, it needed oil change oil filter, hydraulic filter and hydro filter (if it is a hydro transmission) at 50 hours and again at 100. Check hydraulic fluid level in the sight glass by your left heel when seated on the tractor. (you have to get off to look into the sight glass, It is hard to see, you might need a flashlight). Check the engine oil level of course. Some people change all the hydraulic fluid at the first change, at 50 hours, tho my manual calls for it at 400 hours. The front axle will need checking or changing also, it is independent of the rest of the fluid. there is a bolt on the upper right side of the front of the axle. fill untill it starts to run out on a level surface. three grease fitting under the center area, brakes and clutch, and two fitting on the front axle pivot. and the 3 point wear areas need some too. Probably needs antifreeze changed by now. But as others have said the best thing to do is get the owners manual (you cannot download it) and start reading.

Indeed purchase Operator's Manual for there's break down list what needs to be done...just take your time and double check...if HST take tad longer plus few more dollars.

Yep, get the owners manual.

Did you buy it off an individual???or a dealer????

If it was an individual, if they bought it new, they should still have the manual.

If it was a dealer, considering this is still a fairly new tractor, they should have hooked you up IMO

As others have mentioned, a lot of things needed to be done already. You need to find out what has/has not been done. As already mentioned, the origional filters were painted grey (assuming when the tractor was painted). The new ones will be white if they are kubota.

Check the hydraulic filter for sure. If it is still grey, change it NOW. If it is white, you are probabally ok. If it is anything else, or any brand other than kubota, change it NOW. Not that other companies dont make good filters, the kubota one has a loarge magnet in it. Many posters on here have found several shavings @ their 50hr service. You NEED that magnet.

Have you checked Messick's website? I found good info on service there.

It won't apply to your tractor, but here is an example on the L40.

Kubota L-40 Series Service

I would also get the Owner's Manual.
