Barn Post Question

What are typical procedures for the bottom of the post in buried post barn? I mean what goes into the post hole besides the post? Size of the barn will be 40x60x14. Thanks.

I have 36" holes and about 6"8" of limestone in the bottom. Some use concrete, rubber.... others dirt....

Depends on what the frost line is. Up here it's 48" I usually go about 60" and put 12" of clean gravel in before I set the post.

I set my posts for pole barns and decks both in concrete. I make the bottom of the hole wider than the top to resist upheave and taper the top ot the concrete away from the post so it doesnt Pool around the post.

With my 8" PHD and a 4x4, this is usually two bags. On my pole barn, using anywhere between 8-10" utility poles and a 12" digger, it was still about two bags per hole.

When Cleary built our 42' x 72' x 12' barn, they put a concrete "cookie" in the bottom of the holes, and then attached two "wind blocks" to the bottom of each post - the wind blocks being just a piece of nailed on 2" x 6" PT to prevent uplift. Holes were then backfilled with dirt.

Concrete cookies and gravel, then crete it in. Or you could use sona tubes over deck blocks and make sure to cut the sona tube lower than grade and fill with concrete to grade so that the concrete is larger at the top for frost heaving.
