eBay/Craigslist Banned From Ebay???

Guess what! I got a phone call today saying that someone turned 2 of my listings in as being against policy? I asked the gentleman what policy that was and it was that I had a phrase that could be linked to an outside source (www_TheSmartFarmer_dot_com) which they had decided to make illegal at the beginning of this week. I really did not understand how that could be illegal as it is not a direct link to the site but you know eBay they can not loose a dime. SO anyways I go on about my business and at about 6 pm this evening they call again and say that I am banned for at least one week from eBay /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I simply asked the guy why I would be banned and he told me that there have been eBay member that have consistently been bidding on my auctions and then he accused me of being those people :1336: That is so far away from the truth that I do not even know what to say back to him!! So he hangs up and I sit and think about it for a while and call back, I asked him what items these eBay members had been bidding on? He tells me the item number and it is one that did not even reach the reserve :fing20: Anyways to make a really long drawn out story I am banned from eBay for 7 days. Can you believe that??? I have never heard of such BS.

Ebay takes shill bidding pretty seriously at their site. If you were accused of shill bidding and lost your privileges as a result I might suggest contacting one of their senior managers to explain your position better.

Ebay also claims to have the technology in place to substantiate shill bidding. I don't know if that is the case or not.

The term 'shill' isn't limited to ebay.. It's a long time 'auction' term... you refer to the actual fake or 'straw' bidder as the 'shill'.

There is no policy against putting a web address in an auction -- especially if it's the SELLER's website. Now, if you are trying to get eBay visitors to visit your website to SELL something, avoiding selling it through eBay, bypassing their fees -- well, that's a no-no. You can't use eBay as a portal to your own online store.

There is more to this story -- we've only heard one side. Bidding up your own, or a friend's auction is downright ROBBERY.

I purchased lynch pins (pardon the expression) from you about a year ago and ever since, I kept an eye on your auctions. They're always reasonably priced and no nonsense. This circumstance strikes me as being blown way out of proportion. Good luck to you.

A lot of eBay's policies have changed in the past years. When we first signed up to eBay back in 1997 our user-name was pineridge7.com can you guess why? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Some time back we got a call from eBay telling us that because of a policy change we had to pick a new name or they would do it for us. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif URLs are no longer allowed as eBay user-names. That's not to say that you still won't still see some but once another user reports the violation the eBay staff will follow up with a reminder to the offender.

The site is way to big for them to police themselves, they rely on the eBay collective community to bring them up to speed. I jokingly refer to them as the BORG /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was sorry to hear about your bad luck. Hopefully ebay can get it straightened out so you can get back on it. It is not fair to you to be banned if you were playing by the rules, which it sounds like you were.

I hope they find a way to ban these people who put up all of these fake tractor auctions. I almost bit on one myself, well a couple, but then I remember the old axiom, "If it sounds too good to be true, then it is."

I think shill can also refer to gambling. For instance, gaming joint is running a poker game. They might employ a person to play in poker game using house money. That person is called a shill.

Knowing two peolpe who have been involved with the same thing from e-Bay, if e-Bay knew for a fact that this practice was going on, then you would have been suspended permanently without question. The do moniter where bids are made from, etc to try to limit everything illegal that they can. I have even had to get rid of my policy here at work that employees cannot sell anything to one another without going through e-Bay. The idea was to keep from having inter-office termoil by running everything though e-Bay, but they said that we couldn't do this eventhough it does not violate any e-Bay policy. I guess they can set their on policy.
