I read an add on Craigs list this morning about a used, dirty, ugly ballast box close enough to me for $300. I called him thinking it had to be a typo that he had over looked. " Nope " he said, "that is the price". I have been kicking around getting one for a long time so after I said good-by to him I called up my friendly Deere dealer and ordered a new one. $216 plus $71 for a bushing kit. Oh, by the way, my dealer lets me pay full retail price on every consumer item I purchase. BUT it is still cheaper than that guys old beat up one.

Some people think their stuff is really good.

Maybe the guy was operating on the principle that "if you tell a big enough lie people will believe it"? :confused3:

If it was lined with silver it was a good deal. Sometimes you have to ask the important questions.

Like...was this a scam and I'm just missing the sarcasm? Or did some one really think they were going to get $300.00 bucks?

No, he was serious and wasn't going to budge because he thought new ones were a lot more money.

4 hours later I seen he had lowered his price to $200 but that is still to high for one that is all beat up.

$300 for a used ballast box is tantamount to robbery!
I bought mine, a Deere box filled with sand, for $90. It was about 2-3 years old and had never been used. That was a good deal...but a really used ballast box should go for well under a hundred bucks.

The bushing kits should be a lot cheaper than that! Was is BW15056 that he quoted?

TSC also sells them, as well as: QUICK HITCH ADAPTER KIT CAT 1-3

I built mine for well under $100 and that includes the barrel the hardware and all the cement. sure I had to weld up and cut a few things, but it is a "level 1" project, not too difficult.

I saw that one, looked pretty steep to me! Besides, it would have been a 2-1/2 hour drive for me! :( ~~ grnspot110

I have no idea what he ordered, I did it over the phone. Below is from JD's "build your own" web site.

I just purchased a 2010 3520 w/FEL and considered a ballast box but I went with a 450 lb. 72 in rear scape blade. JD was offering a 700 dollars off on two implements so the FEL counted as one and I went with the blade. I thought I might as well get something I can use instead of a box with no use besides weight. Yes you have to watch what you're doing when you back up or swing around but you should be doing that anyway.

Problem is, 450 lbs isn't much weight for ballast...read your loader manual.

My little 2520 has 1,000 lbs in ballast box, and it will still pick the back end up a little if I try to lift huge load with loader.

450 lbs is better than nothing, but you will find that you need alot more than that.

Hmmm, this is interesting, mine won't do that. If I try to lift too much,my loader,(for lack of a better word) relieves itself. It just won't lift until I reposition.
Aren't the relief valves on all 2520s supposed to be set at the same pressures?

In all due respect a ballast box can do more for your TRACTOR than a rear blade ever will.

Go get a bucket load of wet dirt and take a peak at your front tires. I did. Scared the crap out of me as I thought both tires were going to explode right there and now.!! Not to mention the front axle.

A 3520, I would guess, should have 1000lbs. of ballast. Your manual will say.

My 2520's R4 tires don't squat hardly at all when properly inflated.

I'm "Guesstimating" 1,000Lbs in my box.

Its most noticable if I try to pick up something with the corner of the bucket, that picks up one of the rear tires with ease.

The idea of using an implement is okay, but it needs to be heavy enough to do the job. I don't have a ballast box either but I use a 1250 lb boxblade when I need something compact behind my tlb.
