I have a new holland 273 baker with an attached thrower. The baler works great and seldom misses a bale. However at times it struggles in light hay. I think the windrows that are light don't push the hay through fast enough, and then the thrower belt actually burns the strings before the bale gets far enough along to be thrown. This is frustrating. It works great when there is a lot of hay but not so great when the hay is lite. Anyone have any suggestions?

My 311 NH does the same thing just make windrows bigger or speed up ground speed in light hay

I did speed up and I loosened the bales so they would pull out easier. a friend told me there was a piece or attachment you could install on the sides of the baler that would help, but i don't know what he was referring to?

Get a bigger V Rake and make the windrows big enough to bale good. Sounds easy doesn't it?:)
I have a similar problem and will have a V Rake for next year.

I have a 316 New Holland. It likes heavier windrows and does not like grass hay. Does real good with alfalfa.

my 273 works great in anything as long as there is a decent windrow. bit in real light hay it's a pain. in heavy rows, it will throw the bales out like crazy, but in 3rd or 4th cut when there isn't much hay, it's a problem.

Just make bigger windrows, problem solved. You get less hay per cut. Hence why it costs more to buy put double the hay in.

Probably referring to removable wedges that are attached to the vertical sides of the baling chamber to keep the flakes packed tightly when the plunger is setting up for the next packing stroke. The wedges install in pairs. My MF124 baler had three pairs.

Good luck
