I just realized it's been decades since I had one ... literally. I remember them as being pretty simple. Core, stuff with a raisin, brown sugar, cinnamon and butter filling, then bake. But I can't remember if they should be peeled or not. Seems like not so they hold together better. Or what kind of apple to use if it matters.

I also seem to remember a version wrapped in pie crust.

We leave the peel on . . . it makes for a great desert! and any of your firmer apples are better . . . granny's is one that comes to mind.

We have so many apples, and differing kinds and never know what to do with them. Not a fan of cooked apple skin. Baked apples sounds easy. Baking pies is hardly worth the time, effort, energy and money compared to buying one at a fruit stand. Time would better be spend cleaning the tile grout in the shower. Then enjoy your store bought pie. lol

I'm not real big on pies for the most part. If I'm going to do something along that line, I'd prefer apple crisp which I see as a bottomless pie with a more fun top.

Buy yourself a small hand operated cider press.
You can make MUCH better cider than any you can buy.
I use at least 3 varieties of apples, one of which must be Macintosh, and I add several pears to each press batch.
My little press makes about a gallon with each pressing. Takes about 7 minutes or so for each press batch.
I can NEVER find enough cheap apples!

I use a mash grinder, and press, similar to those sold by : Grain mills, Bosch mixers, Nutrimill, quality kitchen machines at PHG

I love cider and buy it at the store.

I had an antique shredder and press. I remember I ruined a brand new dress shirt, splattered with apple. Who knew?

I got rid of it, because it seemed like a lot of work. Looking back I can't see why it would be. I was a lazy teenager then, maybe that's it. I would do it more in an industrial manner this time. A hydraulic press would be cool. I think the screw driven press I had was lacking. If one had a hydraulic press, would one even need to shred them?

My youngest son went to a prep school in New England.
They had a large hydraulic jack press at each of their football games.
School had their own orchard as well.
They did not grind the apples, just pressed them whole.
Those Fall NE afternoons, watching their games and having some fresh cider, are all great memories.

I have a press, but I've thought about making an attachment for my log splitter, maybe some day...

Not a bad idea SR . . . juice them up quick.

From what I've read, apples were pretty important from the beginnings of this country. They were not too difficult to cultivate, and folks drank a lot of hard cider and other alcoholic beverages. I suspect they were not as strong as some of the stuff we have today, but it was there nonetheless. In years past, I have noticed that a lot of the old abandoned farm homes had a small orchard, remnants of which still existed.

We make baked pears once in a while. Really simple.

Peel, cut in half lengthwise and core. Place in baking dish.

Cover with the following mixture:
1 1/4 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup fine sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp cinnamon
pinch of nutmeg
1 tsp grated gingerroot

Bake at 375F for 30-35 minutes, basting from time to time

I used to come home from school every day and eat 4 baked apples. I believe that I just cored them, filled the center with brown sugar; added a sprinkle of cinnamon and dab of butter, and nuked them until they glowed. ;) While they were cooking I would eat a couple of hot dogs, and probably finished topped the apples with a scoop or two of ice cream.
Don't I wish that I could eat like that now.

:) There was no nuking them when I was in any school.

I have an apple tree that is a graft off of a Johnny Appleseed tree. Not much of an apple flavor wise, but it produces well.

My wife works at a cold storage owned by a bunch of apple growers. Needless to say we have access to apples :D Will have to give this one a try, both in the oven and in the traeger. Sounds yummy.
