I went to Lowes recently to get a kitchen faucet repair kit. The guy at Lowes told me they didn't have the one I needed; he got on his telephone and wrote something down. He said, "Here, take this to Home Depot; they have what you want". I did, and they did.

I had a similar experience. I went on Menard's website and spec'd a building. Looked for similar ability on Lowes and HD websites, nothing. Went to Lowes and HD stores to inquire. Both stores said they couldn't do that. If I give them a material list they could price it for me. HD also told me to go to Menard's website.

Haven' seen any changes at the Lowes in my town. They are crying for employees for jobs they cannot fill both temp and permanent. Most applicants can't pass their drug test demanded by insurance companies. Problem is rampant now in this recreation drug State. I still see the same employees doing the store display changes. Their wages are higher that the floor walkers. They are going more to contractor stocking. Customer service is actually on the upswing since a new manager came in last summer.

I really like my Lowes in South Sound Olympia... the customer service was exceptional when working on my projects...

Wish there was one near in the SF Bay Area.

One thing I noticed is almost all the Big Box employees are kids in their 20's... often no or very limited experience. The Olympia Lowes was just the opposite... retired trades people in Plumbing/Electrical/etc...

Lowes is the only store where the manager opened after hours so I could grab plumbing parts...

Hope they do OK as competition is good...

Maybe my experience boils down to an exceptional manager at this location...

That is often the case for any kind of store. I know of a chain restaurant that closed. It had terrible service. I would have thought they would have tried a new manager before shutting down. Maybe they did.

I whole heartedly agree that a manager can make a difference in the overall attitude in a place of business. I find it interesting that we will quit going to a store because of a bad experience with the empolyee(s). But in reality the turnover of employees means in less than a year you could have almost an new staff. But we never go back. I am guilty of it myself. That is one reason I like the internet. I have sent several emails over the years letting corporate know what is happening locally. Not that it does any good, but at least they know why this customer left.

I’m inclined to not go back to bdubs after today’s slow service and mediocre food.

I did pick up what I needed at Lowe’s

I haven't checked out via a cashier in years at my local Sam's Club,
Everything is Scan and Go via my phone.

We do much the same at our local grocer.
After the cashier scans what I've chosen, there's a QR code that appears on the customer display.
I scan the code with my phone and it's automatically deducted from my bank acct or added to my Visa card.

We're becoming a cashless society.
It's coming sooner than you think.

I seldon leqave the farm to shop anymore.
I know what I want. So it's point & click on Amazon.
Then it shows up here in 2 days, tax free & I never left my desk.

Besides, it's the same chinese garbage, anyway.

Self checkout is great at Costco and grocery stores, but sometimes not as handy at HD or Lowe’s when you get bulky stuff. I now love self checkout, didn’t at first.

I like the self checkout at Sam's club. Only issue is age verification on nicotine lozenges. Then I use the regular checkout since most of the helpers for self checkout aren't allowed to do age verification.

Self check is especially handy when I'm buying drinks for the shop on the company CC. I can roll up with the flat dolley and get out usually in a couple minutes.

I hate the self checkout. I never know what kind of produce I buy, and I always put something wrong in the sack, or don't put something right in the sack. I get my arse chewed out enough by Sharn Jean; don't need some imperious robo-female at the check out stand to add to it. :p

I love the self checkout at HD, now that you get to use a cordless 'gun' as long as there is a bar code on each item (I check when I put it in my cart). If I have multiple items I shoot the first one as many times as qty and move on. The clerks tend to scan each item in your cart regardless of if there are multiple identical items.

Whether we want it or not?? I see no advantages to going cashless and there's the big privacy downside. Plus, not everyone has (or wants) a smart phone, and credit/debit cards are more hassle than they're worth for small purchases. Hopefully, that day is a long way off.

That having been said, I do use a CC more than I did 10-15 years ago, especially for gas.

I use self checkouts whenever I can, don't understand the hate some have towards it. Is it just that it's &^%$ newfangled technology or is it something else? Never fails I always seem to pick the line with the slowest cashier when I have to use one.
For some reason neither Shaws nor Price Chopper (only 2 supermarket chains nearby) offer self checkout...Shaws discontinued it a couple years back, PC never had it (at least any stores I've been in).

I don't know how age verification works around here...nothing I buy requires it.

I don't like "self checkouts". There is usually one item that refuses to be scanned. The stores that have them should give a discount for using them. What's next? Maybe have their customers stock the shelves for them while browsing the isles or maybe attach a dust mop to the shopping carts?

Around here you get carded for buying aerosol paints. That will slow you up considerably at a self checkout at one of the big box stores. Especially if the assistant for the self check out is tied up with a snafu on another lane.

Those two are kind of contradictory, no?

I'd prefer to deal with a person who has a job, even if a menial one. I don't like machines taking over for people.

I guess I’m just a DIY sort of guy. Hate standing in line waiting for somebody to do it for me if I don’t need to.

I like machines doing things so I don’t have do to it slower by hand.

Lowe's lost much of my business when they dropped major brands of electrical and plumbing parts.

I agree with Diggin It--I see self checkout costing jobs. How are folks supposed to support business if they don't have a job?

I have a friend who was a shift manager over the checkout area at Lowe's for a while, they had a hard time getting and keeping enough people to pass a drug test and show up for their shifts to keep 1-2 registers and a 4 space self checkout station open.
While I would prefer more cashier's working, I can't really fault them for going the self checkout route given the issues that they have with staffing (ornlack thereof).

Awesome. Next step is to "chip" me. Then I don't hafta carry a wallet. I remember reading about a similar system somewhere, can't remember where though. ;)

 If one is a bible reader / etc you might have read it in Revelation 13: 16 and 17 ............................
