Regarding self checkout, I love it and use it every chance I get for a multitude of reasons.

I don't like "self checkouts". There is usually one item that refuses to be scanned. The stores that have them should give a discount for using them. What's next? Maybe have their customers stock the shelves for them while browsing the isles or maybe attach a dust mop to the shopping carts?

I noticed a robotic floor cleaner while in Menards last week. It was a little Zamboni style floor washer, just cruising up and down the aisles with no one on board.
As for stocking shelves, I've been known to rearrange products if they are messed up. I also get boxes off the top storage areas if I need something and I can read the stock numbers (as long as there's a ladder nearby). The store clerks nearly have a heart attack when they see me up on those ladders carrying boxes down.

It’s a safe bet they took someone’s job. If it was yours you might not be laughing.

Here's what kills me. Every time I walk past the self checkouts at HD to get to a real checkout, there'll be one or two clerks standing there just a few feet away in case the machines screw up. Why not just have them check normally?

My jobs have been downsized, upsized, and rightsized. And offshored, oversea'd, and filled by younger for cheaper too! The only constant is change. Evolve or get left behind, etc etc. It's the way it is.

Robots replacing floor cleaning seems like a good thing. And if by doing this home depot can hire another physically impaired greeter like the one at a local store here, I'm cool with that too.

Come to think of it, if robots did everything couldn't we all sit around eating grapes?! I could be biased though, I work in and love tech (not the big bro kind!)

I think you may be stuck in time. At what point do you wish progress and automation stop?

Man is mastering the ability to adapt to survive. ‘Smart’ machines and processes allow us to grow and focus on the difficult.

Mundane repetitive tasks are not man’s nature. Especially Americans. I disagree that there are fewer jobs because of automation.

The US continues to lead the world in innovation. We tend to get bored soon after we innovate and let others perfect the product while we strive to be on the cutting edge.

Personally I am excited to see what’s next and to see how our offspring are going to take over the lead.

I don’t buy from a store just so they can hire more people. I’m there cause they have something I need. they can sell it to me with 1 employee or 100, as long as they have it and I’m willing to pay the price.

Do you pump your own gas?

Do you clean your own house, or do you use a cleaning service just so they can hire people?

I dont use self check out, Im not a store employee nor do I get paid for pretending to be one.
The 2 x I used it at home depot, the machine went bonkers and had to be fixed in the middle of a lot of purchases.
I waited for 15 minutes until they figured it out and fixed what was wrong with it.
No more for me...
